HBO's The Penguin concluded the eight-episode series on November 10, 2024. And after the harrowing success and acclaim it has received, fans are already curious to know when Colin Farrel's Penguin will be seen next.

The Penguin is a direct sequel to Matt Reeves' The Batman (2022), where Gotham City is under a power vacuum after the death of Carmine Falcone. Since the spot of underworld kingpin is up for grabs, Oz Cobb sees this as a chance to power up.

The series tells his origin story of becoming the ultimate kingpin of Gotham's underworld after defeating all possible rivals on the way. While the show was a limited series, the makers are discussing a potential Season 2 with HBO after its success.

While The Penguin Season 2 is not confirmed yet, Farrel's Penguin will appear in Batman 2, which is slated to release in October 2026.

Will Colin Farrel's 'The Penguin' appear in The Batman 2 next?

Farrel initially commented in an interview that he is not too keen to return as Oz Cobb in Season 2 because of the heavy suit, elaborate prosthetics, and the immense time it takes him to get into the character.

Following the show's success, the actor revealed how his view of the character has changed, and he is open to returning. The show was always meant to be a bridge between the two Batman movies, during which OZ would ultimately become the king of Gotham Underworld.

His next appearance would be in Batman 2, as confirmed by Reeves, where he will meet Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne/Batman with double force, having power over the city.

According to Farrel, while he hasn't read the script so far, he is excited to see how the character will be in Batman 2 -

''...by the end of the eight episodes, it’s concretized into something else. There is a degree of almost delusion psychopathy present in the last scene. So how is that taken up in the second film? I was told I have five or six scenes. I don’t have any hopes or any expectations. I’m really an open book, and that’s the way I get excited by shit or not.''

How did The Penguin's finale set up the character for The Batman 2?

In The Penguin's finale, we see Oz realize his complete villainous potential, emerge as a gray character, and have so much remorse for anybody. In the first episode, we see him kill Alberto, which clears his way to becoming the underworld king.

Then, he is opposed by Sophia Falcone, who he sends to Arkham State Hospital in the finale. And in a shocking twist of events, he also kills his right-hand Victor in the finale because he does not want to have any person close to him that would become an emotional liability in the future.

While there was some discussion about Batman making an appearance in the series, we do not see that happening. But, as Oz and Eve dance in their living room, we see the Bat signal finally turning on in the distance.

This hint is enough to decipher that Oz will be back as the antagonist in Batman 2. However, Farrel's comments on him being in only “5 or 6 scenes” in Batman 2 make one wonder why he might not be the only primary villain up against Batman.

But, one thing is certain: fans will surely get to see Farrel reprise his role in the future. Catch all the episodes of The Penguin on Max.
