There is much confusion regarding Amazon Prime Video's new release, Citadel: Diana, with many fans considering it a sequel to the American spy-action television series Citadel.

While a second season was announced for Citadel, Citadel: Diana is the Italian spin-off of the original American series. The original show is reportedly one of the most expensive television shows, with a budget of US$300 million.

With the Russo Brothers acting as the executive producers, Citadel was always helmed as a Global project with many different spin-offs set in Italy, India, and Mexico. With the showrunners calling it their own “Citadel Spyverse'', the makers are ready to build a franchise for the show.

Citadel was released on April 28, 2023. While the show received positive reviews, they did not reflect the budget spent on its production. However, the producer Angela Russo-Otstot discussed how the show's powerful storytelling appealed to a Global audience.

Citadel stars Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra Jona, Mason Kane, and Nadia Siny. Here are the details about the Citadel spin-off that were explored.

How are Citadel and Citadel: Diana related to each other?

The showrunners discussed the show's Global appeal and its popularity in India, mainly because of its female lead, Priyanka Chopra, an Indian actress. Considering this popularity, an Indian spin-off titled Citadel: Honey Bunny will also be released in November.

While Citadel: Diana is a spin-off of the American series, it does not feature the same cast. The Russo Brothers act as executive producers for the show, produced by an Italian production team with Gina Gardini as the showrunner.

Both shows' stories are unrelated, meaning that viewers can watch both series independently and exclusively.

“Season one was the inspiration point for Citadel: Diana and Citadel: Honey Bunny. Then those shows figure out that if that’s the starting point and that’s the narrative world we live in, and the stylistic world that we live in, how can we interpret that in a way that’s organic to characters that we want to explore and the settings we want to put them in.'', Anthony Russo

Since the shows are set in different cultures and areas than the others, they offer something unique, and only the Citadel Universe holds them together. The showrunners talked about how the stories in each spin-off are different-

“We want them to have any possible entry point that makes sense for them...Each of these stories welcome a brand new audience in a manner where they will enjoy the stories for what they are.”
