Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is a police procedural drama focusing on the trained New York Police Department who deal with cases related to sexual assaults. Coming from the production company of Dick Wolf, Law & Order: SVU happens to be Law Order’s first spin-off series and the second one in the franchise, besides Law & Order: Organized Crime.

Premiering in September 1999, Law & Order: SVU is currently on its 26th season. It is only natural that such a long-running show has seen the entry and exit of many new and old characters. However, the farewell of Kelli Giddish’s Amanda Rollins had shaken the fans.

Despite saying goodbye to the series as a regular cast member in 2022, Kelli’s character has made several guest appearances, the latest being season 26, episode 3, titled Divide & Conquer.

Since Amanda married ADA Dominick Carisi Jr. (Peter Scanavino) in season 24, it was only natural that she would be making guest appearances on the show. With the latest season featuring her, fans have been wondering if she would be returning to the show for good. Let us now explore if the speculations are true and whether Amanda Rollins is indeed coming back to Law & Order: SVU.

The short answer to the question of Amanda Rollins returning to Law & Order: SVU is no. Despite making a number of guest appearances since her exit in 2022, there is no concrete news of Amanda coming back to the show as a regular again.

Currently, Amanda is running her team, NYPD's Intelligence Unit, where they weigh political conspiracies, international crime rings, drug trades, and crimes in those lines. Despite being in a leadership role, Amanda’s pressure has now significantly reduced from what she had to endure when she was in SVU. Moreover, her current role is less mentally and emotionally toiling as well.

In season 26, episode 3, when Amanda meets her former Captain Benson, she updates her about her present role, saying,

"Don't take this the wrong way; I love it. It's like getting to eavesdrop on the whole world."

She also thanked Benson for vouching for her during her interview and encouraging her to do some soul-searching before she could settle down anywhere. Benson expresses her happiness at seeing Amanda this way and the two share a warm reunion moment.

Speaking about her return to Law and Order: SVU and how it could impact her happy ending, Kelli Giddish told Variety,

“No, she is happily married. She has a new baby, so she’s got three kids. I think her relationship with her mom is a little better and her relationship with Benson [is] always developing. I think her having such a solid base with Carisi makes a huge difference in the choices that she feels like she’s able to make and how emboldened she feels to take her life into her hands and make some good, still interesting decisions. I don’t think she’s getting into trouble, but it is different now because she’s not a detective in the Special Victims Unit.”

Ahead of this episode, she had also mentioned to Entertainment Weekly that this is not the last one for Rollins and fans can expect to see her again in a different episode that is

“totally out of the ordinary.”

So, while Amanda might not be returning to Law and Order: SVU as a series regular anytime soon, given that she is now working with NYPD, it will not be very unlikely for Benson to give her a call regarding any case and thus bring her character back for guest appearances.

Law and Order: SVU can be streamed on Peacock.
