Is 3 Body Problem getting a season 2? Details explored

After its premiere on March 21, 2024 on Netflix, 3 Body Problem, the sci-fi show based on Cixin Liu’s novel by the same name, generated significant buzz. Given the storyline of the novel, it was not possible for the makers to wrap everything up in a single season and therefore expectations of subsequent seasons were already high among the fans.

Fortunately for them, on May 15, 2024, Netflix mentioned that 3 Body Problem “will return for more all-new episodes.” Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s Vice President of Scripted Series had also confirmed the same, saying,

“The extraordinary 3 Body Problem, brought to life with the deft hands of Benioff, Weiss, and Woo will soar to never-before-seen heights as they tackle the rest of the mind-blowing journey through Death’s End. Their brilliant vision as storytellers is matched by their amazing partnership — and, just like the fans, we can’t wait to see what they have in store.”

However, nothing else was specified. This confusion was soon put to an end on May 31, 2024, it was officially confirmed by writers D.B. Weiss, David Benioff, and Alexander Woo that 3 Body Problem will be coming back with 2 new seasons.

3 Body Problem has been renewed for season 2 and 3

As mentioned previously, Netflix renewed the series for season 2 and 3 at the Netflix FYSEE space 3 Body Problem Television Academy panel. In the words of the creator, Weiss,

“We included a lot of what we loved from the [novels by Cixin Liu] in Season 1, but the vast majority of reasons we wanted to make this show are in Season 2,”

He further added,

“We always wanted to get to the final page of the third book, and it’s really, really thrilling to us that we will get to do just that.”

Regarding the show being renewed for a new season, the creators had also mentioned to Tudum,

“Ever since we read the last page of Cixin Liu’s magnificent trilogy, we hoped we’d be able to bring the audience to the end of the universe with us. Here we go!”

While the number of episodes per season has not been confirmed yet, fans are happy enough with the fact that two new seasons will be coming soon.

“3 Body Problem explores how humanity chooses to respond to its gravest threat. While there have been no updates on the cast yet, it can be expected that characters who survived season 1, including Jess Hong (Jin Cheng), Jovan Adepo (Saul Durand), Eiza González (Auggie Salazar), Saamer Usmani (Raj), Liam Cunningham (Thomas Wade), Marlo Kelly (Tatiana), and Benedict Wong (Clarence “Da” Shi) will be coming back for the next season.
