The much-awaited debut of Aaron Paul in Invincible Season 3 is finally here. Breaking Bad's Jesse Pinkman voices a character named Scott Duval. Duval is introduced as someone with a tragic backstory and holds Invincible responsible. The lack of justice and the government's disinterest pushes Duval over the edge.
To hold Invincible responsible, Duval, who already has limited superpowers, decides to experiment on himself to increase his powers and abilities. Powered up, Scott sets himself on a path of vengeance against the man who, in his eyes, wronged him. The synopsis of Invincible Season 3 reads:
"A powerful new figure challenges Mark’s idea of what’s right and what’s wrong. Rae approaches Rex with a big life decision."
Invincible Season 3 Episode 6 recap
Here are some of the key moments from the 54-minute episode:
The GDA has high hopes for Oliver
We learn that Scott Duval is a scientist working for the GDA. He and his colleagues discuss whether Invincible is a threat or not. A woman on the table points out that Invincible is Earth's only hope against a Viltrumite invasion or at least, the only hope until "2A," i.e., Oliver, becomes an adult.
They refer to Oliver by a code name, likely because Cecil hasn't disclosed the secret identities of either Mark or Oliver. That's why Scott doesn't attack Mark at his home. As for their hope in Oliver, it is unclear how the show will handle his power level. If the comics are to be believed, his Thraxan side makes him somewhat weaker. However, the show has made changes before.
Rae and Rex have feelings for each other
One of the highlights of the previous episode is Rae and Rex's date. In this episode, an emotionally vulnerable Rae reveals to Rex that she is quitting superheroism to live a "normal" and less dangerous life. She asks Rex to accompany her, but he is apprehensive since being Rexplode is all he has. He doesn't stop her from living, though, and they share a kiss.
Here's hoping that they don't stay apart for long.
Mark meets a sympathetic villain
Scott Duval, aka Powerplex, like Titan, is a villain—but not an evil one. The episode begins with him in Chicago on the fateful day Omni-Man viciously beats up Mark and destroys half of the Windy City. Scott loses his sister and little niece in that fight. He tries to hold Invincible accountable through legal means, but the authorities do not seem interested.
Dejected Duval, who is a scientist at the GDA, steals experimental technology to boost his electric-based powers. Now, powerful, he rebrands himself as Powerplex and publicly challenges Invincible, only to be rebuked twice. His wife, who supports him, suggests an idea to gain Invincible's attention: a fake kidnapping, where she and their toddler son would act as hostages.
Duval follows through the plan, and Invincible finally arrives to save the woman and the baby. A battle ensues, and the Powerplex overpowers Invincible. However, after incapacitating his opponent, Duval notices the electrocuted bodies of his wife and child— losing everything. He is then incarcerated, but his grudge against Invincible only grows stronger.
The mid-credit scene sets up a new challenge for our heroes
The third episode of Invincible Season 3 revealed that the multiversal supervillain Angstrom Levy is still alive. The mid-credit scene sets up an epic and destructive confrontation between the Mark we have followed for the past two seasons and his evil variants across the multiverse.
