(Note: This post discusses important developments in Invincible Season 2)
As Invincible Season 3 draws upon us, it makes sense to rewind and look back at the previous season. The popular animated show adapts the Robert Kirkman comic book series of the same name that ran for 144 issues between January 2003 and February 2018. The series is set in a universe where super-powered people are an everyday occurrence.
The protagonist of the popular animated show is teenager Mark Grayson, who is the son of the Viltrumite, Nolan Grayson, who is the world's greatest superhero, Omni-Man. When Mark gets his superpowers, he decides to suit up and become the superhero, Invincible. Towards the end of the first season, Mark learns of Nolan's true purpose: To prepare Earth to be a part of the Viltrum Empire.
Mark and Nolan engage in a brutal fight in which the former is beaten. However, before Omni Man can deliver the killing blow, he remembers the love he feels for his family and abandons Earth tearfully. After that, we see him for the first time in Season 2, Episode 3, titled This Missive, This Machination!
Season 3 of Invincible streams its first three episodes on February 6, 2025. Thereafter, a new episode drops every Thursday. Read on for a quick refresher on what happened in Season 2.
What happens in Invincible Season 2?
Here are some of the major developments that happen throughout the eight episodes of Invincible Season 2:
The multiverse is introduced
The second season of Invincible opens not in the prime Earth, but in an alternate one. On that Earth, we learn that Mark has willingly joined his father in taking over the world. Here, we also meet Angstrom Levy, who has the power to traverse the multiverse. Levy is voiced by Sterling K. Brown.
Levy seeks the help of the Mauler Twins to create a machine that could link his mind with other variants of Angstrom Levy across the multiverse. As he connects himself to the machine and is almost linked to his multiverse counterparts, Invincible crashes in to stop the machine. There is an accident, and Levy's head grows disproportionately, and he decides to take revenge on Mark.
Mark has a sibling
Episode 4 of Season 2, titled It's Been a While, reveals that Nolan, now the ruler of a planet called Thraxa, is married again and has a son who is half-Viltrumite and half-Thraxan. In the same episode, Nolan is captured by other Viltrumites, to be executed, and Mark is ordered to carry out his father's mission. Two months later, Mark readies himself to return to Earth. However, Thraxa's Queen has a request.
The Queen requests Mark to take his half-brother back to Earth because Thraxans will perish quickly and the half-Viltrumite baby would be stranded alone. After returning to Earth Mark reveals to his mom about Omni-Man's other son. Debbie accepts the baby and names him Oliver.
New Viltrumites are introduced
In the Season 1 finale, we got a small tease of what the Viltrum society looks like. In the second one, we are introduced to two new major Viltrumites from the comics: General Kregg and Anissa. Anissa is an infamous Invincible character for her involvement in a highly-critiqued moment in the comics. After a brief team-up, Anissa and Mark fight each other, and she easily bests him.
Viltrumites underestimate Allen
In the third episode of the second season, Allen is attacked by three Viltrumites, who leave him as good as dead. Coalition leader Thaedus, who is secretly a Viltrumite rebel, ends Allen's life support, making the latter stronger. On waking up, Allen realizes that he can withstand Viltrumite attacks. However, when kicked by a Viltrumite prison guard, Allen pretends to be unconscious in order to be imprisoned.
In prison, Allen meets Nolan and they both communicate telepathically. It remains to be seen when they will break out of prison. Imprisoning Allen, however, is one of the first errors that the Viltrumites have committed in the series.
Angstrom Levy attacks Mark and his family
After staying out of action throughout most of the season, Levy finally makes his move against Mark in the Season 2 finale, titled I Thought You Were Stronger. In that episode, the multiversal villain holds Debbie and Oliver hostage, and sends Mark off to a different universe every time he tries to intervene. Mark's multiversal hopping has references to The Walking Dead, DC, and Marvel Universes.
Mark finally manages to lay his hands on Levy. However, before Mark can inflict serious damage on Levy, the latter transports both of them to a deserted universe. In that universe, Mark kills Levy, ultimately stranding himself in the process. Disturbed by his action, Mark feels hopeless but is found by Guardians of the Globe from an alternate dimension, who are also older.
With their help, Mark returns to his universe and feels guilty about his actions. Everybody else reasons that Mark was forced to kill Levy, but that doesn't make him feel better.
The season ultimately ended with Allen and Nolan communicating telepathically from different cells. In the closing moments of the finale, Nolan verbally admits that he misses Debbie. Their telepathic communication may set up a prison break episode in the third season.
Invincible Season 3 will stream its first three episodes on February 6, 2025. You can watch the current season and the previous ones on Prime Video across the world.
