Hulu has come up with a new series named Interior Chinatown, which seems to be the perfect blend of action, comedy, and surrealism. The show dropped on the streamer on November 19, 2024.

Based on Charles Yu’s 2020 novel of the same name, the series focuses on Willis Wu, a character actor who is stuck playing the role of a background waiter in a police procedural drama and wants to be in the spotlight.

He finally gets the chance when a detective unofficially hires him to work on a case, owing to his knowledge of the neighborhood. As Wu starts investigating the matter, he comes face to face with his own past, and the lines between fiction and reality get blurred.

The storyline of Interior Chinatown

The show is centered around Willis Wu, who is bored with his character role as a waiter at a Chinatown hotel in a police procedural show. Wu wants to explore life outside Chinatown and become the main character of his own story.

One day, he is contacted by Detective Lana Lee, who seeks his help in solving murder cases in the neighborhood. Meanwhile, Wu has a personal struggle to cope with, as his brother has been missing for 12 years.

When Lana says that Wu’s brother was working for her, it gives him hope of a reunion between the siblings. However, Wu witnesses a crime that leads him to uncover a web of crimes in Chinatown.

As he goes on unraveling the truth, he also gets to learn about his troubled family history and finally gets a chance to feel like the lead character. The official synopsis for the series reads:

“The show follows the story of Willis Wu, a background character trapped in a police procedural called ‘Black & White.’ Relegated to the background, Willis goes through the motions of his on-screen job, waiting tables, dreaming about a world beyond Chinatown, and aspiring to be the lead of his own story.”
“When Willis inadvertently becomes a witness to a crime, he begins to unravel a criminal web in Chinatown, while discovering his own family’s buried history and what it feels like to be in the spotlight.”
