Blair Waldorf and Serena Van Der Woodsen are two prominent characters on Gossip Girl. Both the novel series and the television series of Gossip Girl feature the entertaining relationship between Blair and Serena as a primary attraction. The duo's fame reached far and wide owing to the fantastic performances delivered by the actresses Leighton Meester and Blake Lively, respectively.
Blair and Serena's relationship was characterized by several ups and downs throughout the course of the show. They often had frequent falling outs but were always quick to settle their differences. Here's everything that we know about their relationship.
Gossip Girl: Blair and Serena's love-hate relationship explored
Throughout the entirety of the novel series and the television show, the relationship between Blair and Serena was presented as that of two friends who were almost like sisters to each other. However, the relationship was often put to the test since both seemed to be in love with the same man, i.e., Nate Archibald. There effectively came to be a love triangle involving Serena, Nate, and Blair. Apart from this, Blair always wanted to have the amount of attention that was commanded by Serena.
During the first season of Gossip Girl, Serena ended up sleeping with Nate and, as a result, Blair decided to spill this secret to Serena's crush, Dan Humphrey, as her form of revenge. There was also another time when modeling for Blair's mother, Eleanor Waldorf's clothing line, became a bone of contention between the two. While Blair was initially slated to model, she was soon unexpectedly replaced after Eleanor's colleagues convinced her that Serena was the better choice. Blair was expectedly hurt.
The relationship between Serena and Blair suffered several setbacks throughout their journey on the show. Nevertheless, no difference was too big and no heartbreak was too overwhelming, as they always found solace in each other.
Blake Lively drops truth bombs from her time on Gossip Girl
Blake Lively appeared in an interview with Stylist back in 2016, wherein she revealed stunning details from her experience of working on the popular show. Lively took the opportunity to relate how the show often intervened in her personal life:
"Stepping back from it, I can see it. But I remember there was one point where we were just afraid of how our personal lives overlapping our work life could be perceived by our bosses. (But then) we were like, 'Oh no, that's exactly what they want.'”
This is especially relevant in the context of Lively dating Penn Badgley at the time. She further added that the creators of the show encouraged an extension of their characters into the actors' real lives:
"They wanted us all to date. They wanted us all to wear the same clothes that we're wearing on the show. They wanted that, because then it fed their whole narrative. People could buy into this world. I was wearing the same clothes and doing fashion shoots, and dating the same person that my character was dating, because of that, what people were projecting onto me was that I was Serena ... We look the same, and we acted the same as far as they could tell, because I wasn't doing anything but that show.”
Gossip Girl is available to stream on Netflix.
