Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 finally addressed Kevin Costner's exit after his character John Dutton was revealed to be dead when the season returned.
While Part 1 made fans believe that Jamie was also behind his father's death, Part 2 revealed that Jamie was genuinely heartbroken about his father's death and blamed himself for driving his father to suicide because of the impeachment trial.
Many fans and Beth believe that Jamie killed his father and he was the presumed Yellowstone villain, but in reality, it was his girlfriend Sarah Atwood who planned and ordered the hit on John, which makes her the real villain of the series.
She later reveals to a sobbing Jamie that John didn't commit suicide and she has ordered the hit as Jamie also agreed, but he was shocked to learn this truth as that was a comment made in anger and because of Sarah's persuasion.
More on the real villain in Yewllostone in our story.
Sarah Atwood influenced Jamie and made him the villain in Yellowstone
Sarah is a litigator working for Market Equities, which had millions of dollars riding on the Montana developments, which were in jeopardy after John became governor and cut off airport funding. Sarah was bought in to protect these funds and she was the one who planned the hit on John to take him out.
In Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2, Sarah is seen meeting with a company that plans assassinations, and the whole procedure of removing her jewelry and accessories to enter the meeting shows the severity of her actions.
To further her plan, Sarah sees Jamie's weakness when he is upset after John wins the elections, and she finds a way to dismantle John's power and protect Market Equities' funds. She wins Jamie's trust and pretends to be his partner so that she can take out Jamie.
Winning Jamie is easy because he has been insecure and always wanted to win his father's approval. While he never wanted John dead, Sarah brainwashed and used him, which made him order the hit on his father (while he was angry).
Beth avenged John's death by killing Jamie in the Yellowstone finale
While it can be argued that Sarah was the real villain who almost pressured Jamie into ordering a hit on his father, Jamie had his own faults and was not fully innocent. While John welcomed him into his family by adopting him and loved him like a real son, Jamie could never see this because of his own insecurities.
Jamie is always a grey character in Yellowstone, and he fully realizes his character's negative aspects when he impeaches John in Season 5 Part 1.
Not only was this a betrayal towards John and Dutton's family, but Jamie also publicly marred his adoptive father's image and later ordered the hit against him, which prompted his girlfriend to carry out John's murder.
In the Yellowstone Season 5 finale, Beth vows to avenge her father's death over his burial, and since Sarah was already dead, that left Jamie at the mercy of his sister. And while Jamie did not kill his father, Beth still avenged her father's death by killing him in the series finale.
This was a shocker for the fans as while Jamie was at fault, he was not his father's murderer but was still killed in the finale.
