Fans of the CBS police procedural drama series, Blue Bloods, are rejoicing after the network confirmed a spin-off sequel series based on Donnie Wahlberg's protagonist, Detective Danny Reagan.
After 14 seasons, the fan-favorite show bid goodbye to its audience in December 2024, but it looks like the makers are keen on expanding Danny's story.
Blue Bloods finale showed a satisfactory ending to the Reagan family and hinted at a possible romance between Danny and his partner, Detective Maria Baez (played by Marisa Ramirez). The idea was pitched by Wahlberg to the writers.
Read on to know more about Danny's romance with Baez, and how it could develop in his new spin-off series, or whether there is the possibility of an entirely new angle in his life.
Donnie Wahlberg pushed for Danny-Maria's story in the Blue Bloods finale
Blue Bloods fans were finally happy to see Danny back in the dating scene when he asked his partner, Maria Baez, out for pizza. The gesture was not grand — just two friends getting pizza — but longtime fans of the show were waiting for Danny to start dating after the death of his wife.
In an interview with Variety, Wahlberg discussed how he pushed the writers to make this storyline happen for Danny in the Blue Bloods finale:
“I think that was a lot of me really pushing. I pushed a lot for some closure with that. I went to [writer] Siobhan O’Connor, and I was like, ‘Listen, you’ve got to do something. They don’t need to go get married, but something would be nice, just to show that there may be a future for them, or that their relationship has really evolved.'”
Maria has been Danny's long-time partner on the show, and fans were starting to ship them together, especially because Danny needs a romantic partner on the show. Wahlberg discussed this point in the interview:
“As the audience started sort of clamoring for a relationship with Danny and Baez, I thought, it’s more important for them to grow and for her to start making an impact on him, and him to really respect her in a way that he hasn’t always respected certain people in the show.”
Danny will get a new partner in the Blue Bloods spin-off
However, it seems like Danny's pizza date with Baez did not turn into something more as he is moving to Boston in Blue Bloods' new spin-off series, which is titled Boston Blue, for now.
After many fans petitioned to bring back the CBS show, the writers are also keen on expanding the universe, which is why a new spin-off is in order. According to Entertainment Weekly, the new spin-off will follow Detective Danny as he moves to Boston, away from his family and finds a new partner in Detective Lena Peters, “who hails from a prominent family in Boston policing.”
Earlier, fans also shipped Danny with his former partner Jackie, but things did not work out for them. Fans were then excited to see how Danny's pizza date with Baez turned out, however it looks like he will stay 'just friends' with her. Discussing this aspect in the interview with Variety, Wahlberg said:
“It was important to [producer] Kevin Wade to not have every partnership turn into a relationship. And I respected that, and I agreed with it. I think it was just probably important for me personally that Danny grows.”
It would be interesting to see what happened between Danny and Baez after Blue Bloods, and what direction Danny's story takes in Boston Blue.
