In a twist that even the most dedicated Sister Wives fans didn't see coming, Kody Brown – the man who once juggled four marriages – found himself fighting back tears during the November 24 episode.
While helping his ex-wife Meri move to Utah, Kody delivered the emotional gut-punch of the season, declaring,
"It's just heartbreaking in a way... I love the life I have, but it's very different from the life I had three years ago."
The moment came as something of a surprise, considering Kody's journey from polygamous patriarch to what he's cleverly dubbed "the favorite divorced wife" status with Meri.
For those who haven't been keeping score at home, Sister Wives has chronicled Kody's gradual transition from having four wives to just one, as Christine, Janelle, and Meri all bid farewell to their shared husband, leaving Robyn as the last wife standing.
Sister Wives’ Kody Brown says goodbye to Meri
The episode captured what Kody dramatically called "the final nail in the coffin of our dream" as he helped Meri relocate from Arizona to Utah. In a moment that could rival any soap opera, Kody reached out to hug his ex-wife, declaring,
"Meri, it's the end of an era. It was a great run, but I'm not gonna let it get me down."
The waterworks caught Meri off guard, prompting her to voice what viewers were probably thinking: "It always blows me away that you get emotional like this. I don't understand." Join the club, Meri.
Kody, who has graduated from his "anger phase" of the multi-divorce process (is there a support group for that?), explained he's now in the grief stage. In what might be the understatement of the year, he noted that his life is "very different from the life I had three years ago."
In a shocking turn of events that probably had viewers of Sister Wives checking their TV guides to make sure they were watching the right show, Kody apologized to Meri for their seven-year estrangement. "I'm sorry about the seven years, but I'm glad we did it. Because now I can mourn a loss instead of being angry," he said.
Meri, however, wasn't buying what Kody was selling. In her confession on Sister Wives, she expressed what many might call justified skepticism:
"I do not understand. I don't get it. I don't know where this is coming from. I don't understand it. I don't understand it. He has made it clear that he did not want me in his life, so why this emotion?"
Meri's friends, for their part, were throwing a metaphorical party when she finally called it quits in early 2023. As Meri shared,
"They're like, 'OK, we're here for you, we're supporting you. And it's about damn time.'"
With her blinders finally off, Meri realized that Kody's strategy might have been more calculated than she thought, suggesting he had been trying to push her out so that "he's not the bad guy because he didn't walk away."
Meri is finally the favorite in an unexpected way
In what might be the most backhanded compliment on Sister Wives, Kody declared Meri "the favorite divorced wife" and "the favorite ex-wife." Meri, showing she hasn't lost her sense of humor, quipped,
"Finally, I can be the favorite!"
The episode wasn't done serving up irony, as Kody mused in his confession, "Meri's just on point today. She's just the wonderful woman that I would have liked to have been married to." This is from the man who was, in fact, married to her for decades.
As new episodes of Sister Wives continue to air, one thing's becoming clear: in the Brown family, even goodbye comes with a side of drama. And while Kody may be "mourning a loss," viewers are left wondering if what he's mourning is the realization that his plural marriage dream has become decidedly singular.
Sister Wives airs every Sunday at 10 p.m. EDT on TLC.
