Vancouver, a stunner of a city with its rich cultural background and gorgeous scenery, is fast becoming a star in its own right – not merely because of its natural beauty, but also for its role as a serious player in the world of entertainment.

The cast of Wild Cards, a new crime comedy TV series on CBC, sat down with CTV Your Morning to relate their thrilling experiences of location shooting in the vibrant Canadian city.

The show, a combination of suspenseful plot turns and quick wit, infuses the crime genre with a thrilling buzz, and Vancouver is implicated in a manner much greater than the setting.

Wild Cards' stars and creators were patiently waiting in the wings to share the city that was the stage for their laugh-out-loud and edge-of-your-seat escapades. When the interviewer asked about the city, Vanessa Morgan replied,

"Oh, it is. Well, it's home to me now, so of course I love Vancouver, but yeah, just getting to see the forest to the oceans and, again, not hiding that, you know what I mean, that it's an American city and really showing it."

From offbeat neighbourhoods to breathtaking nature scenes, Vancouver's appeal isn't only experienced in its topography; it's ingrained in the show itself. The cast demonstrated how the city's dynamic spirit had an impact on the on-set mood, begetting a magical synergy that occurs from one episode to another.

A backdrop with no equivalent

It was not merely a matter of cashing in on its iconic landmarks as an on-camera asset for the viewers when shooting a crime comedy series in Vancouver. The city itself was one of the characters, the cast of Wild Cards says. The changing backdrops, from busy streets to secret alleys, perfectly complemented the off-the-cuff and catty tone of their spontaneous and humorous story.

As the cast noted, Vancouver's cosmopolitan cityscapes were perfect for the elastic story, where anything could occur at any given time. From the office environment to a crazily frantic chase scene, Vancouver provided a varied selection of locations to make it all happen.

As Giacomo Gianniotti, who went on a hike outside the city after the filming, said,

"Yeah, this was The Chief, which is a pretty famous hike there in Squamish, just outside of Vancouver, and I had almost zero personal time while I was shooting this show, as Vanessa knows, and so I was sort of counting the days that I was finished so I could actually attempt this and do it. So I love hiking."

The special vibe of Vancouver in Wild Cards

The most impressive experience throughout the shooting was how special Vancouver's vibe ended up being on the set. The cast discussed how the city's vibrant melting pot of cultures, beautiful water scenery, and out-of-the-way spots contributed significantly to making the show quirky.

The city seemed to have a true connection with the show because Vancouver's energy seeped into their work. No wonder the city is on the hotlist for productions — its pairing of city sophistication and landscapes presents an atmosphere wherein gloomy and cheerful moments are allowed to take center stage.

A seamless cast, stimulated by Vancouver's spirit

From the cast's dynamics as well as on-set anecdotes, it is certain that Vancouver was more than simply a location from which to film; it was a muse. The bohemian nature of the city encouraged cooperation and creative problem-solving. The actors praised the way the environment encouraged them to become their characters completely, infusing their performances with a vigor that was a reflection of Vancouver's bohemian atmosphere.

Right from the first day of filming, the cast's chemistry and the city's mood brought life to the production in ways no one could have anticipated.

The scenic yet urban mix

Shooting a crime comedy is an art of walking the tightrope between suspense and comedy, and Vancouver's combination of city and nature gave it the perfect setting to pull off that tightrope walking. With its skyscrapers standing alongside gargantuan parks and mountains, Vancouver contains an amazing mix of both worlds — urban and natural.

Venessa described Vancouver as,

"This is Canada, and Canada looks like this in the West, so yeah, it was rece. Absolutely beautiful."

It's that conflict which made Wild Cards so fantastic, with the cast able to weave instances of tension in between bouts of laughter. Where the cityscape and buildings converged was where the show became a metaphor for the show itself — jarring, but satisfying.

Vancouver as the primary location of shoots

Vancouver did not become the location for filming Wild Cards by accident. As far back as years ago, Vancouver has had numerous TV dramas and movies flock to it because it offers varied scenes and state-of-the-art manufacturing plants. Wild Cards' actors acknowledged how the city has become a standard in filmmaking, with the ideal setting to bring creativity alive.

Since the cast continues singing the praises of Vancouver, it is clear that the city has worked hard to be among the best locations to film, and its touch can be seen in the final product.

The perfect fit for Wild Cards

As the cast of Wild Cards looked back on filming in Vancouver, one thing was clear: Vancouver was not merely a background — it was the ideal location for a show with crime, comedy, and improvisation. From the scenic mountains to Vancouver's offbeat neighborhoods, the show's impact has to be partly due to the location.

It's not just a town where something happens to be produced for television; it's a character itself, summing up the series into something as distinctive and essential as the town. Ultimately, the cast's response to Vancouver was nothing but positive.

The city provided more than a beautiful backdrop to the series; it provided a feel, an energy, and a personality that took Wild Cards to the next level. As the series goes on, one thing is certain: Vancouver will be leading the production, infusing every scene with its personality.
