One of the interesting subplots unfolding in Daredevil: Born Again, Episode 7, is the one involving the new "Kingpin", Vanessa Fisk and Luca, head of one of the city's five crime families. Luca persuades Vanessa to solidify her position as the head of New York's criminal underworld by betraying her husband, who is the new mayor of the city.
In the concluding moments of "Art For Art's Sake", the seventh episode of Born Again, Vanessa sends Luca a message with Wilson Fisk's location, a restaurant where he is sat eating alone. But as Luca walks in and is about to shoot Wilson, he is shot by Buck Cashman, Wilson Fisk's right-hand man, implying that they were already aware of Luca's murderous intentions.
Ever since Luca's death in this episode, viewers are wondering if Vanessa betrayed Wilson because she is unable to understand why he wants to be the mayor, or if the couple conspired to kill Luca. Brandon Davis, the host of Phase Hero: A Film & TV Podcast, echoed similar sentiments to David Boyd, the director of this episode of Daredevil: Born Again . The director responded:
"I love that we don't know. We don't want to say it, I don't think. We want to intimate it somehow, but let's leave that not known for a while. Let Dario and everybody sink that in. What a cool thing that is."
What do the Daredevil: Born Again director David Boyd's comments mean?
His comments suggest that for now, it remains to be seen if Luca's killing was orchestrated by Wilson and Vanessa together or if it was something that Wilson Fisk anticipated for a while and kept Buck around for this eventuality. Looks like it might be a while before Daredevil: Born Again definitively answers the question of Vanessa's true intentions.
The discussion between Brandon Davis and Boyd was not restricted to just this Vanessa moment. The director also hyped up the next two episodes of Daredevil: Born Again, which were both supposedly reshot because of the creative overhaul. Boyd put forth his belief that the changes made in the overhaul will play an instrumental role in the upcoming two episodes of the show. He said:
"My theory is that the new pilot has headed us right to this precipice. The next two are going to be smashing. I think the reason they did the pilot again is that's what gets us there. What we did is bridge it from beginning to end and left it off to a phenomenal ending."
These comments promise explosive penultimate and ultimate episodes for the fans of The Man without Fear.
What is Daredevil: Born Again about?
Born Again is the revival of the original Netflix show Daredevil, which ran for three seasons between 2015 and 2018. Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Elden Henson, Ayelet Zurer, Deborah Ann Woll, and Jon Bernthal reprise their roles from the original series. The show follows Matt as he deals with the sorrow of losing Foggy (in the opening minutes of the first episode) to Bullseye. Adding to Matt's troubles is Wilson Fisk's successful mayoral bid.
The official description of the show on Disney+ reads:
"In Marvel Television’s 'Daredevil: Born Again', Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), a blind lawyer with heightened abilities, is fighting for justice through his bustling law firm, while former mob boss Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) pursues his own political endeavors in New York. When their past identities begin to emerge, both men find themselves on an inevitable collision course."
Currently, seven episodes of Daredevil: Born Again are accessible for viewing on Disney+, with episode 8 set to release on April 8, 2025!
