Shark Tank season 14 episode 13 introduced viewers to a business idea proposed by Scotty Trujilo, who was tired of copy-pasting on his computer. To solve this problem, Scotty came up with a copy-past keyboard, a mini device with two keys, one for copy and the other for paste. The keyboard could be easily connected to a device via a USB.
Despite the enthusiasm for his product, Scotty was unable to secure a deal with any of the sharks as they backed out. The copy-paste keyboard founder was seeking $40,000 for 25% equity. Shark Tank investor Lori appreciated Scotty's honesty. Meanwhile, Robert praised his positive attitude.
Before backing out to make an investment, Lori wished Scotty good luck on his venture, stating he could partner up with other sharks who had more experience in the tech field. She continued:
"I love your honesty, I am having trouble putting my arms around this. I don't think this is the right kind of business for me I'm really not a techie person and I think that there are better partners up here for you than me. I wish you good luck though and I'm out."
Shark Tank investors back out from investing in Scotty Trujilo's copy-and-paste keyboard
Despite having high hopes of securing a deal at Shark Tank, Scotty was unable to convince the investors that his product was innovative. However, the Sharks did praise his positive attitude and were impressed by his interesting pitch. After Mark Cuban, Daymond John backed out from investing in the copy-paste keyboard. Daymond said he couldn't relate to the product as he prefers using his phone rather than a laptop, he continued:
"I tend to be somebody who's just I'm really on my phone. I don't even carry a laptop actually. So i don't relate to it as much as you do."
Additionally, Robert couldn't understand the product being something that was required in everyone's day-to-day life. He was impressed by how Scotty presented himself and complimented the copy-paste keyboard founder on his positive yet captivating energy. The Shark Tank investor also predicted great things for Scotty's future, he said:
"It's such a complex technology. You're captivating, you're a little bit eccentric in a very nice way, the product is crap but I want to invest in it somehow. I just, can't own a copy-paste keyboard product Scotty. Seriously, all joking aside, I actually think you could do brilliant and great things, but for now, I'm going to have to do what the other sharks did, copy-paste."
Cuban, on the other hand, didn't view the product as a necessity, he shared his suggestion of combining the "keyboard combinations" as one key on the already existing keyboard itself. He said:
"You do realize if somebody knew what they were really doing you could assign those keyboard combinations to one of the F characters up at the top. So I'm out."
Hence, Scotty left without a deal but appreciated the sharks for their remarks and comments regarding his product. In the end, during his confessional interview, Scotty said he was still motivated to continue his journey despite feeling disappointed about not securing a deal.
