CBS's NCIS: Los Angeles, a spin-off to the network's (still) longest-running police procedural, NCIS, has seen many fan-favorite characters, but none like Eric Christian Olsen's Detective Marty Deeks.
Debuting in Season 1 as a guest character, Deeks quickly became a fan favorite character because of his wit, humour, and action, and he was promoted to a recurring character in Season 2.
He was truly the best part of the procedural because he brought the best of both worlds, LAPD and NCIS. Since he was specially brought in by Hetty as a Liaison officer for LAPD-NCIS, his unique position gave his character an edge, and he quickly worked his charm on other team members.
Deeks' character was written off in Season 12 because the LAPD-NCIS liaison position was discontinued under new department reforms.

Marty Deeks in NCIS: Los Angeles- An outsider with a tragic backstory
Marty Deeks is a beloved character in NCIS: Los Angeles, and part of that success goes to how different he was from the others on the team. Starting with his tragic backstory, while everyone in the force had one or the other tragic stories that motivated them to choose this profession, Deeks' became his catalyst.
As a young boy, Deeks once shot his father non-fatally because of his father's abusive tendencies. One day, while he was completely wasted, Deeks' father pointed a shotgun at him and his mother, which led to the agent taking this drastic step.
While Deeks was often the comedic relief in NCIS: Los Angeles, this tragic backstory gave him an edge over the other characters. It bred a need to protect the women around him and an unspoken vulnerability, which added more layers to his character.
Secondly, his position in the team made him an outsider, which often created conflicts with the other members. As an LAPD officer, Deeks lacked the training given to the NCIS team, which often made others look down on him and thus created conflicts. However, Deeks' instincts and an innate desire to protect others again gave him an edge, and he brought the best of both worlds into his character.
While Hetty assigned Deeks to a permanent position as a liaison officer in Season 1, he was quick to call out and question her decisions when he felt the need to. His conflicts with Sam and casual arguments with Callen and Granger created tensions within the team, which created good plot lines.
Deeks' transformation and his love story with Kensi in NCIS: Los Angeles make him a fan-favorite character
Deeks is a fan-favorite character in NCIS: Los Angeles partly because Season 1 Deeks is very different from Season 12 Deeks, and who doesn't love a good transformation?
While Deeks was not an unlikeable character even in Season 1, he was seen more as a comedic relief then. People's perspectives changed when his backstory was revealed in Season 2, and he was also made a main character in the show.
Talking about his character's journey on the show, Olsen said (via TV Insider):
''Deeks’ emotional growth over the course of the series was from compartmentalized, unemotional, self-preservation to fearless vulnerability.''
The one person who was by his side throughout this transformation and emotional journey was his wife, Kensi. Their love story is not only one of the best romances on television, but it also added so much depth to both of their characters.
Kensi was a stiff and one-dimensional character in NCIS: Los Angeles Season 1, but Deeks brought an added layer to her character as well, and together, they took the audience on a romantic, thrilling ride. Deeks' actions and confessions toward Kensi were never traditional, creating an unconventional love story that finally resulted in marriage in Season 10. They were expecting a baby in the series' finale.
While Deeks' character was written off for good from the procedural, his surprise appearance (with Kensi) in any of the spin-offs would be exciting for fans.
