HBO's post-apocalyptic drama, The Last of Us, is back with a fresh season and more zombies! Crafted by Neil Druckmann and Craig Mann, this Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey starrer series has won several accolades, including Emmys and SAGs. The series delves into the journey of survival of Joel, played by Pedro Pascal, and a teen, Ellie (Bella Ramsey), with strange immunity powers in a post-apocalyptic U.S.
The Last of Us Season 2 premiered on April 13, 2025, with its first episode titled 'Future Days.' The events of this season take place about five years after the Last of Us Season 1 finale. In Season 2, Bella Ramsey molds to a more physically demanding role with intense stunt work that reflects Ellie's character evolution. Bella opened up in an interview with Collider about practicing for the upcoming fight scenes. She told,
"I live for that sort of thing... I want to do stunt work for the rest of my life."
Ramsey also opened up about how she enjoyed filming such intense action scenes and how she prepped for them. She told Collider,
"It's so fun. I had the absolute best time... I'd been training for a couple of months beforehand, for all the physicality of this season."
The first episode shows Ellie training for the upcoming challenges in the post-apocalyptic world. Now that the relationship between her and her 'adoptive father,' Joel, has strained, the threats seem nearer and deadlier than ever. The premiere episode begins with introducing Abby (Kaitylyn Dever), one of the few surviving candidates of the Firefly resistance groups that Joel destroyed in Season 1 to save Ellie. Abby is ready to take revenge against Joel for killing her Firefly father. By the end of the episode, the cordyceps on the pipes are proof that Abby and her allies have already reached the outskirts of Jackson in Wyoming.
Bella Ramsey teases an 'intense' finale for The Last of Us Season 2
In the interview with Collider, Bella opened up about several things, including her fight sequence, her relationship with Dina, and her strained relationship with the overprotective Joel. Ramsey teased an intense, emotional, and unexpected The Last of Us Season 2 finale. She told Collider,
"I think people are going to feel like they've been on a pretty intense rollercoaster. I hope people are slightly emotionally traumatized because it's supposed to make you feel a lot."
The Last of Us Season 2 has opted for a seven-episode run instead of its former nine-episode schedule. Viewers can thus expect a tighter and more intense journey as Ellie faces darker and raw choices and deadlier enemies amidst fractured bonds.
Adding to this, the show creators have also opened up about how the premiere episode is nothing in comparison to events that would unfold in the later part of the season. Halley Gross, the co-writer for The Last of Us Season 2, told Deadline,
"Nothing is frivolous, nothing is done just for decoration. Everything is a setup for a pay off. So I would pay attention to who are they when they feel safe, because things are about to get really dangerous."
