James T. Kirk in the Star Trek Universe is one of the more revered captains, who commanded the celebrated USS Enterprise. Star Trek: The Original Series introduced us to Captain Kirk in 1966. Throughout the franchise’s history, we get glimpses into Captain Kirk’s past, but only once have his parents been shown on screen, in JJ Abrams’ Kelvin timeline. Winona Kirk, portrayed by Jennifer Morrison, plays the role of the mother of James T. Kirk, played by Chris Pine.
Winona Kirk appears in the opening scenes in JJ Abrams’s 2009 movie Star Trek, aboard the USS Kelvin. Jennifer Morrison is the only actor who has played the role of Captain Kirk’s mother through the Star Trek history. In the prime timeline, while Captain Kirk, played by William Shatner, has on occasion mentioned his father’s influence on him, there has been no information with respect to his mother.
J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek trilogy movies take place in the Kelvin timeline, an alternative universe in the franchise comprising the same characters from the Prime universe but in a different reality. It follows a different timeline compared to other Star Trek ventures. So while it is understood that James' parents, George and Winona Kirk, exist in the Prime timeline, we do not get to see them on screen.
Winona Kirk in the Star Trek Kelvin timeline
Winona Kirk is pregnant and aboard the Federation starship USS Kelvin along with her husband, Lieutenant George Kirk (played by Chris Hemsworth). They encounter a Romulan mining ship, the Narada, commanded by Nero (played by Eric Bana). When Nero questions the captain of the USS Kelvin about an Ambassador Spock and does not get the desired answer, he attacks the ship.
George Kirk, who is the first officer of the USS Kelvin, requests crew members and his pregnant wife to leave the starship immediately.
After Winona is taken away, she gives birth to a boy. She is on a comm with her husband, who is about to go down with the ship. They decide to name the boy James Tiberius Kirk. The moment would hold great significance for James Kirk.
Later we learn that Winona has gotten remarried and is living with her family in Iowa. In one scene, we would see a young James riding and crashing his stepfather's Corvette while his mother was away. There is no further information about the character.
While Winona is mentioned in the following movies: Star Trek: Into Darkness and Star Trek: Beyond, Jennifer Morrison does not make an appearance again.
Morrison has been part of several popular television shows, including House, How I Met Your Mother, and Once Upon a Time.
