Severance is one of the most popular shows on Apple TV+, and the credit for the show’s success partly goes to the lead, Adam Scott. The actor’s performance as the dual personality of Innie and Outie in the series has been praised by the fans.
However, not many are aware that Adam Scott was going through a tough time personally when he started filming for the show. The actor had lost his mother in March 2020, a few months before Severance Season 1 commenced production.
In an interview with NPR in April 2022, Adam Scott revealed how he had not come to terms with his mother’s death until he moved to New York City in October 2022 to begin work on the sci-fi psychological thriller:
“That October, when I went to New York to do the show, the second I walked into the apartment and put my bags down and I was by myself, I realized I hadn't fully grieved and come to terms with my mom's death.”
Adam Scott once revealed how Severance helped him in processing his mother’s death
Adam Scott’s mother, Anne Scott Chambers, passed away in March 2020 after a battle with ALS. In October 2022, Adam arrived in New York City to prepare for his role in Severance, and the shoot began the subsequent month. Talking about how the show helped him process the loss, the actor said in his interview:
“I had that in front of me and nothing but this time by myself to do it. And that's what I slowly but surely did over all that time by myself, either in this apartment or at work. And I feel like the show was certainly part of that process.”
In the same interview, Adam talked about how his mother’s demise impacted him personally:
“For me, her death was world-changing. ... She was sick, she had ALS, so we knew what was coming there for a couple of years. But then the moment it happens, what I didn't expect, ... everything shifts.”
“There's sort of a tectonic shift internally that's like a switch going off. What I realized was with a parent, it's like half of your view out the window. It's half of what you do things for. You're always thinking, Oh, what's my mom going to think about this?”
Looking at Adam’s stellar performance in Severance, audiences could not have guessed he was going through such a difficult phase in his life while filming for the first season. His role as Mark Scout, a worker at Lumon Industries whose office and home memories were separated, has earned critical acclaim and the audience’s love. Adam has also won several accolades for his performance, including a Critics Choice Award, and a Webby Award, along with nominations at Primetime Emmys and Golden Globes.
Created by Dan Erickson, Severance revolves around the employees of a fictional corporation who undergo an experiment to bifurcate their personal and professional lives.
Apart from Adam Scott, the show stars Zach Cherry as Dylan George, Tramell Tillman as Seth Milchick, Britt Lower as Helly Riggs, Dichen Lachman as Ms. Casey, Jen Tullock as Devon Scout-Hale, Michael Chernus as Ricken Hale, John Turturro as Irving Bailiff, Sarah Bock as Eustice Huang, Patricia Arquette as Harmony Cobel, and Christopher Walken as Burt Goodman.
