The cancellation of Mythic Quest after four seasons came as a major blow to fans, especially since it seemed like the show still had a lot of creative momentum left—not just in its main series, but also with the successful spin-off Side Quest, which found its place in the top 10 Apple TV shows.
What was even more frustrating for me was the retconning of the season 4 finale after the announcement of the cancellation. The season 4 finale, which has the potential to introduce interesting twists for season 5, was altered and retconned to somehow end the show as it is.
The original version had Ian resigning from the Mythic Quest and Ian and Poppy sharing their first kiss ever after having a complicated relationship throughout the season. But in the altered version, all these spices had to be cut down.

Here is why Mythic Quest should not have retconned the season 4 finale
I think the change in the scene of the altered finale, where the viewers are deprived of witnessing Ian and Poppy finally unite with a kiss, doesn't offer a perfect closure.
The kiss was a culmination of four seasons of tension, emotional growth, and a deep creative bond between the two leads. Removing it changes the tone of the ending entirely. This last-minute change led to a bittersweet ending for the show and a reminder for the fans that a show doesn't only depend on creative decisions but also on industry decisions.
However, according to reports, the altered finale is the same, with just this emotional climax removed. Now this doesn't serve the reason and feels like a deliberate step back. It isn’t restructured or reimagined; it's the same episode minus the emotional climax.
The new ending only shows them mending their relationship, which is a more predictable and safer ending, being the last episode. Some fans also speculate if it is the studio that came up with the finale ending idea.
Exploring the difference between the original and the altered finale episode of Mythic Quest

In the first original version, they both agree to stay back at Mythic Quest and hug each other to resolve all the grudges. They observe something more than friendship when they share a long, lingering look. They snap out of it, and while Poppy starts to walk away, Ian pulls her back for a kiss.
On the other hand, in the altered version, the look still happens, but then they simply snap out of it, and Poppy makes a joke as they march towards their seats.
I feel the original episode works well because if the episode had ended with the kiss, it would have felt more authentic, keeping in mind the suspense of their future together. It would have been a powerful ending, leaving fans to imagine the next step, trusting the audience to carry the story forward in their minds.
