The White Lotus Season 3 featured a stellar cast, some of whom got to play some pretty twisted characters. Amid claims of ‘slow pace’ and ‘not enough action,’ the HBO dark comedy-drama steadily developed its characters and changed their dynamics in every episode.

All this led to an action-packed finale with some unexpected twists and turns and a number of deaths. Though I am impressed by the performances and the slow-burn narrative, I am disappointed with the way Mook’s plot has panned out in The White Lotus Season 3.

The creators failed to utilize the talent of Lisa, though the singer-actress did a swell job with whatever material she was given. Mook was an employee at the resort who worked as a health mentor.

Considering the star power of Lisa and the importance of the hotel employees in the previous seasons, I expected Mook to be one of the major players in the storyline in the new season. However, I kept waiting for her plot to come to the forefront, but all she did was act as a catalyst in Gaitok’s journey.

Why I think Mook did not contribute much to the plot of The White Lotus Season 3

In the first episode of The White Lotus Season 3, Mook greeted the guests with a bright smile. Soon, her interactions with Gaitok seemed to point toward a greater plot. But by the end of the season, I realized the ‘greater plot’ was only about helping Gaitok embrace his violent side and becoming Sritala’s bodyguard.

Mook was mostly on the sidelines of the narrative and was only seen for her budding romance with Gaitok. The only other time she shined in the show was when she performed a traditional Thai dance at the resort, but again, even that performance did not add much to the narrative.

When I compare her character to that of previous seasons’ hotel employees, my disappointment only grows further. Not only did the hotel managers – Armond and Valentina – become iconic, but the rest of the employees also had their fair share of the limelight in the earlier installments.

I mean, who can forget the legendary Lani from season 1, who hid her pregnancy and gave birth to a baby in Armond’s room in the very first episode? On the contrary, Mook’s character in The White Lotus Season 3 was strictly one-dimensional. She had no real plot of her own, and her only contribution to the story was to drive Gaitok’s arc.

As the season progressed, Mook went on a date with Gaitok and tried to convince him to change his personality. While violence did not come naturally to the security guard, Mook persuaded him to do whatever it took to get a promotion at work.

In the end, Gaitok gave in and shot Rick, getting the promotion and making Mook happy. While her story did indirectly tie into the Rick and Chelsea storyline, Mook, and in turn Lisa, certainly deserved better. There were so many shades that could have been brought out of the character, but it felt like a wasted opportunity.

Now, let’s take a look at the rest of the main characters this season. From the Ratliffs to the trio of frenemies, each character was written as a multidimensional person, and every one of them stood out in the overall plot.

Amid a story featuring incestuous siblings, murderous fathers, and an eternal romance, Mook’s presence did not make much of an impact. That is why I firmly believe that Mook is probably the only character in The White Lotus Season 3 whose presence did not contribute much to the overall plot.

The White Lotus Season 3 is available to stream on Max.
