I firmly believe Laurie didn't actually love her friends in The White Lotus Season 3 and this finale scene proves it

The Laurie, Kate, and Jaclyn storyline was one of my favorite parts of The White Lotus Season 3. Amid all the murderous and incestuous plots, we had these three longtime friends who arrived at the resort to have a good time with each other.

The trio looked pretty tightly knit until their masks came off, and they started hurling insults at each other. But despite their altercation, Laurie gave an emotional monolog in the finale, stating how much she loved Kate and Jaclyn. The other two reverted just as sweetly, and they ended their vacation on a happy note.

However, I still believe that Laurie was lying and she did not actually love her friends. There is one moment in The White Lotus Season 3 finale that proves my argument.

During the season’s climax, when the shootout happens, Laurie sprints across the resort, unbothered about her friends, signaling that she does not really care about them.

Laurie’s sprint in The White Lotus Season 3 has me convinced she did not care about Jaclyn and Kate

When Laurie, Kate, and Jaclyn first appeared on the screen in The White Lotus Season 3, they seemed like a close group of friends as they showered each other with compliments.

However, the facade faded off quickly and we got to see a string of gossip sessions in each episode, where two friends teamed up to bring the third down behind her back.

Laurie became their first target, as the poor woman had the most unstable life at that point. Neither was there any bliss in her marital life nor was her career going well. Compared to that, Jaclyn was a successful actress and Kate had a happy family.

Laurie broke down in the very first episode as her so-called friends talked about her alcoholism as soon as she left the table. Over the next few episodes, cracks in their friendship appeared and grew wider when Jaclyn slept with Valentin, the young Russian employee she was initially trying to set up with Laurie.

While Jaclyn did not feel it was a big deal, it brought out Laurie’s insecurities, as she had been feeling left out the entire week. After a failed attempt at boosting her confidence by sleeping with Aleksei, Laurie returned to the hotel heartbroken.

During their final dinner at the resort, Laurie got emotional and said she was just happy to be at the table with two successful women whom she could call her friends. The scene did come as a surprise to me, as Laurie quickly ignored how toxic her friends were and was ready to leave the resort like nothing was wrong between the trio.

However, then came the climax of The White Lotus Season 3, which featured a tiny detail that made me believe Laurie was lying to her friends. The ladies, particularly Jaclyn, were clicking photographs with Jim and Sritala when Rick arrived at the scene and shot Jim.

As chaos erupted, the trio of ladies got scared and ran away from the scene. However, it was Laurie who caught my, and probably everyone’s, attention the most. The woman ran for her life, leaving behind Jaclyn and Kate as if she did not even know them.

The two other women were still in shock before they started running, way behind Laurie. The scene is already going viral for Carrie Coon’s speed, but with this tiny detail, I think series creator Mike White tried to establish that Laurie had realized Jaclyn and Kate were not her real friends.

Protecting yourself in a dangerous situation is one thing, but if you are true friends with someone, you would at least give a hoot about them when a literal shootout is happening. Laurie, on the other hand, probably realized that she was a lone warrior who could never actually be friends with Jaclyn and Kate.

Despite the shootout, the three women continued with their fake friendship and left the resort on a boat, drinking and pretending to have a good time. However, as Laurie’s actions spoke louder than her words, I am convinced Laurie said ‘I love you’ to her friends in The White Lotus Season 3 finale just for the heck of it and did not actually care about them.
