The White Lotus is unlike any show I have seen. Simply because it is a clever twist on the vacation-gone-wrong trope. It’s a sharp and stylish show that boldly explores the darkest of human behaviors.
This HBO show has taken us from the beaches of Hawaii to the romantic streets of Italy and now to the exotic beauty of Thailand. Each season introduces a new cast of affluent (and often morally questionable) guests and hotel staff. It touches upon layers of class, identity, power, and hidden motives. All of which are set against the luxurious backdrop of The White Lotus hotel franchise.
The characters keep changing across the season except one. And that is Greg. He may not seem like much at first. He is a government worker from the Bureau of Land Management. But there is more to him than meets the eye. I believe he is the most dangerous and mysterious character in The White Lotus.
We first meet him in Season 1 when he starts a romance with Tanya McQuoid. She is a rich and emotionally fragile hotel guest played by Jennifer Coolidge. Tanya's life is as messy as it can be. She is miserable from the time we meet her. But things get even wilder after Greg comes into her life. Could it be a coincidence or a carefully laid out plan?
The White Lotus: A match made in mystery
Tanya McQuoid wasn’t exactly thriving when we met her in Season 1 of The White Lotus. She was lonely and clinging to any kind of comfort she could find. She booked a stay at the Hawaii branch of the hotel to scatter her mother’s ashes in the ocean.
She was desperate for connection and so she latched onto Belinda who was the spa manager. She was almost begging her for emotional support and spiritual healing. Tanya was the very definition of a fragile soul.
Greg was introduced to us as this seemingly average old guy staying at the same hotel. He said he was there with a group of other men. Though we never actually see them. He came off as sweet and oddly patient. A complete opposite of what Tanya was like. She was in full meltdown mode most of the time.
Greg just seemed like an old guy who maybe came to Hawaii for some R&R and ended up catching feelings for a wealthy eccentric. Until later when we get to know the real him.
Greg quickly learns that Tanya has serious money. And it’s not exactly hard for him to get under her skin and into her life given how emotionally dependent she is. The whole thing reeks of convenience.
Greg in The White Lotus doesn’t overwhelm her with affection or force his way into her world. He just stays. Quietly. Comfortably. And Tanya folds herself into the safety of it. And so we learn the two are married by Season 2. And honestly, I was shocked.
Because we know next to nothing about Greg. No backstory. No family. No details. He just exists around Tanya and fulfills her wishes like her Italian dream. But he also mutters about how he doesn't want her assistant Portia tagging along. That’s a detail that seems petty at first. But it all starts to make sense by the end of the season.
Greg disappears for “urgent business” from their Italy trip which he insisted on, by the way. And right after that Tanya is swept away by a group of fabulously rich and suspiciously friendly gay men. She ends up in a villa. It’s gorgeous. It’s extravagant. And it’s all a setup.
Tanya discovers a photo of Greg with one of the men. And things start to make even more sense. He was orchestrating everything. Because Greg had only one way to access Tanya’s fortune with a prenup in place. And that's her death.
The signs were all there. He was growing indifferent. And then there was the macaroon scene. He started to lose interest in her and probably even had a problem with her weight. He didn’t want her anymore. He didn’t love her. He just wanted what came after her.
The White Lotus: Greg in Season 3

Greg Hunt who now goes by the name Gary returns in Season 3 of The White Lotus. But this time he's with a much younger woman. She is a model. He’s not staying at the White Lotus though. He is living in a grand mansion and even owns a yacht.
That right there just shows how far his devious plans have taken him. It’s evident from the moment we see him that Greg (or Gary) is living an ultra luxurious life. And we know exactly where that wealth came from.
The reveal that Greg was behind Tanya’s death is further made more apparent in Season 3. Belinda from Season 1 is in Thailand too and she is in The White Lotus! She recognizes him but Greg denies knowing her. But then he goes and investigates her.
He even invites her to his house for a party and offers her a large sum of money which she turns down. This interaction shows us just how manipulative and in control Greg is. And now with that kind of money, he is basically untouchable. Or so he thinks.
We also get a glimpse into Greg's darker side in this season. His girlfriend refers to his “darkest fantasies”. And that's when we know he is not a man who is driven only by money. But by something far more sinister. We still don’t know the full extent of what he’s capable of.
So, it’s safe to say that Greg is one of the most mysterious and dangerous characters in The White Lotus. His unassuming exterior hides a manipulative and calculating mind.
