I firmly believe Episode 17 might be the turning point Matlock needed to save itself

CBS’s legal drama, Matlock, is geared up for a two-hour finale, which is sure to introduce new twists and turns and build for a Season 2. However, after an explosive premiere that set the stage for a thriller disguised as a legal drama, the following episodes did not quite hold the expectations.

However, with Episode 17, titled I Was That, Too, the show might have revamped itself, making us anticipate the finale that will finally reveal who actually hid the Wellbrexa documents, and caused the death of Matty (Kathy Bates)’s daughter, Ellie, after overdosing, by hiding valuable information that could have prevented the opioid crisis.

In the episode, Olympia finally confronted Matty about her lies and deception by restraining her in an unoccupied office. Matty’s identity revelation was initially thought to be the ultimate disclosure that might have ended the thrill and excitement of Matlock’s plot. However, I think it might have actually added more to the storyline as now Olympia and Matty will work together to solve the mystery, but none of them knows what the end result will bring in their lives.

More on this in our story.

Matlock prevails over its predictability with Episode 17 of Season 1

In Episode 17 of Matlock, Skye P. Marshall’s Olympia is finally caught in the web of lies Matty (Kathy Bates) weaves, and her motive to join Jacobson Moore. However, she also learns about Matty suspecting Julian for stealing the Wellbrexa documents, which might bring the finest law firm in Manhattan down, and also cause problems in her personal life, if the father of her two children ends up being the culprit.

I think Episode 17 turns around the fate of Matlock by introducing more layers to the legal drama. After the cliffhanger ending of Episode 16, where Olympia confronts Matlock, we get to the next episode thinking it might be the end of Matty’s lies. However, the confrontation actually was not the end, as now they will work together, risking both careers and lives without knowing if the end result will be favourable to any one of them at all.

However, it also made Olympia and Matty’s friendship complicated, and Matty fighting to retain her bond with the only women she admires in her life. However, if her theory of Julian being the culprit is false, it might impact her relationship with Olympia, who is already distrustful of her. In the episode, we saw how Matty sometimes seems unsure of her conviction of Julian.

From the beginning, we knew Matty’s lies would catch up to her someday, and that might prove to be the end of it. However, Episode 17 brought back the same excitement and thrill with new twists that could account for a high-octane finale as we had seen in the promo for Episode 18, where Olympia can be heard saying that if she goes down, Matty will surely go down.

Don't forget to catch the two-hour finale of Matlock Season 1 on April 17, 2025, on CBS.
