SNL star Bowen Yang co-hosts a podcast, Las Culturistas with Matt Rogers, which featured pop star Chappell Roan on its April 17, 2025, episode. While on the podcast, the female star opened up about Bowen Yang playing baby hippo Moo Deng on the September 29, 2024, episode of Saturday Night Live.
During the SNL skit, Bowen Yang could be seen discussing fans and how they sometimes do not maintain boundaries, referring to Chappell Roan. After co-host Matt Rogers recalled the Moo Deng sketch from SNL, she said:
"I wasn't even mad.....I didn't feel anything," said Chappell Roan.

The Las Culturistas podcast, hosted by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, recently featured Chappell Roan on their April 17, 2025, episode. When Matt discussed Bowen Yang's Moo Deng on SNL, Chappell Roan shared her views.
"Well, can we talk about like when people were dragging you (Bowen Yang) for doing your Moo Deng thing and I was like I bet she (Chappell Roan) thinks it's funny," said Matt.
Listening to Matt, the female pop star jumped in and agreed it was "funny." The Pink Poly Club singer said she wasn't even "mad."
Bowen Yang recalled discussing the skit with his co-stars when he learned that "everyone" was mad, to which Chappel Roan added:
"But I'm not."
She added:
"I'm like...then...why...people don't have to get mad on my behalf. We're fine. And like, so what is there to be mad about? Also, this is what happens. That is SNL, it's comedy. Like, there was...it...it is so lighthearted, it was like to me harmless. and for people to...even if you were to push it further...harmless. It's like...it's comedy. I don't understand like...I don't know the line anymore."
Listening to Chappell Roan opening up, Yang stated sometimes it's "like a lovebombing thing." He added that fans are sometimes "obsessed."
"It's parasocial. I mean what it is is, it's like I need to protect this person. They've expressed that they need help or I feel like I'm projecting what I might need in that situation," said Matt Rogers.
Saturday Night Live's Bowen Yang as Baby Hippo Moo Deng
SNL's September 29, 2024, episode's Weekend Update featured him as the Baby Hippo Moo Deng. He played the viral hippopotamus, baby pygmy, and it also featured Colin Jost.
During the segment, Moo Deng mentioned having fans and how it is difficult to handle the fame. She recalled how sometimes fans throw bananas and seashells at her. Seeing Moo Deng's popularity, Colin stated:
"You know, I have to say, Moo Deng, you know, your life sounds a lot like Chappell Roan's lately, you know. Do you know Chappell Roan?
Agreeing with Colin, Moo Deng replied that she knew Chappell Roan and that everyone should leave her alone.
"Let her take as much time as she needs for her mental health. We both deserve patience and grace, so stop harassing her and stop throwing shellfish at her," said Moo Deng.
Regarding the Saturday Night Live segment, Chappell Roan said she found it "funny."
