Barbara Corcoran, the Shark Tank investor, in a recent post on her Instagram, shared about her strategies as a boss and why they make her the best leader in her eyes. She is a real estate mogul in New York City and talked about how she handles a team.
Highlighting a simple principle, the Shark Tank investor said that a boss should work for their employees and not the other way around. She says that this rule has shaped her success but is not often adopted by many leaders who generally prefer to be traditional managers for their teams.
However, she does not focus on hierarchy and control and instead tries to prioritize the needs of her employees. Instead of micromanaging their work, she tries to make the job easier and enjoyable, which ultimately becomes more fulfilling.
She believes that when employees feel supported, they perform their best, creating a ripple effect that benefits the entire organization.
Elaborating, the Shark Tank investor said,
"I don't mean to brag, but I am the best boss I've ever met. By far. And I don't think anyone could be a better boss than me. And I think the route of being a good boss is from the very first day I was in business, I understood the cardinal rule, which is, I work for you, you don't work for me."
Shark Tank investor Barbara Corcoran talks about putting employees first as her leadership strategy
Traditional employment expects the workers to serve their vision and meet their expectations. However, Barbara Corcoran, the Shark Tank investor, sees things differently. She has flipped this dynamic by asking what she can do for her team instead.
This mindset is not about handing out favors or lowering expectations. Instead, it is all about understanding that the employees work their best when they feel supported and appreciated.
She feels that a boss who listens to their employees and invests in their growth while removing obstacles will ultimately see higher performance and a stronger company culture. Barbara, explaining how she achieves this, revealed,
"And that's my attitude, my entire life. What can I do for you? How can I make your job easier? What don't you like to do? What would you rather do? How could I be this for you? What else do you want? I shower my people with anything they need, selflessly. And you'd say, well, that doesn't put the boss ahead. It does. Because as they go stronger and go up the rank, they carry me for a free ride along the way."
The Shark Tank investor argues that investing in employees is not just a feel-good strategy but a growth plan that yields results in the long term. Companies that have a strong employee-focused culture can perform better and operate well.
Also commenting on the culture of 'Employee Appreciation Day,' Barbara believes that genuine appreciation should be a part of daily practice. Captioning the post, she said,
"My best tip for being a great boss? Appreciate your employees and show them that you love them every day not just on employee appreciation day!"
