When it was revealed that Katy Perry is being replaced by Carrie Underwood to judge American Idol for the 2025 season, I was thrilled. American Idol needs a judge who could walk that fine line between honesty and professionalism. And Carrie Underwood is perfectly suited for that role.

Her journey from the American Idol stage to becoming one of the most successful artists over the past two decades is a story that speaks for itself. But beyond her success, it’s her genuine approach to music and talent that I think makes her an ideal fit for the show.

American Idol needed a familiar yet refreshing voice

American Idol has had its fair share of judge changes over the years, and while each one brought something new to the table, Carrie Underwood’s addition feels like the perfect mix of familiarity and innovation. There’s something special about having a former winner of the show on the panel. She’s not just another celebrity judge; she’s someone who’s been through the exact process that the contestants are going through. Carrie knows the pressure of being in front of millions, of being judged, and of trying to make a career out of a dream.

What I love about her is that she isn’t trying to be someone she’s not. She’s not looking to create drama or stir the pot. She’s there to offer advice, to help, and to keep it real. In a world where it feels like everything is exaggerated for TV, Carrie’s authenticity is a breath of fresh air. And that’s exactly what the show needs—someone who understands the pressures of the spotlight, but who also values the artistry of the contestants.

Carrie brings unmatched credibility

American Idol has always been about finding the next big talent, and part of that is having judges who know what it takes to succeed. With over 27 million albums sold worldwide and numerous Grammy wins, Carrie Underwood is undeniably one of the most successful artists to come out of the show. And let’s not forget, she’s done it all herself, without relying on the typical glitzy reality TV path. She didn’t just win the competition—she turned it into a career that’s lasted over 15 years.

What Carrie brings to the table is credibility. She’s not a judge giving generic responses; she’s a judge who has experienced the highs and lows of the business. She knows what resonates and what doesn’t, and she can provide practical and meaningful guidance. In a world of celebrity judges, Carrie’s success relative to her contemporaries gives her a special perspective that’s sure to connect with both the contestants and the viewers. I don't think you can put a price on that sort of experience.

Carrie Underwood’s empathy shines through

Watching Carrie Underwood on American Idol’s live show, I think it’s clear that even after years of stardom, she hasn’t lost that relatable, human touch. Carrie admitted to feeling the weight of making tough calls, sharing,

“I don’t want to be put in that position again.”

And honestly, who can blame her? Deciding who stays and who goes is no easy feat when real dreams are on the line. It’s one thing to be a contestant, but being the judge who has to make that call? That’s a whole different ball game.

Despite her success, I believe Carrie still feels the pressure. She openly said,

“My night was not as bad in comparison to the contestants.”

But that doesn’t take away from the emotional toll of sending someone home. Carrie’s honesty and vulnerability show that, even as a superstar judge, she’s still deeply connected to the heart of American Idol—and that’s why I think we love her.

Ultimately, I think Carrie Underwood is exactly what American Idol needed: a mentor, a judge, and a role model who understands both the highs and lows of the music industry. With her on board, the 2025 season is shaping up to be one of the best yet in my opinion.
