After four years of speculation and suspense, the Yellowjackets Season 3 finale finally revealed the identity of the Pit Girl, who was hunted down by her fellow teammates in the pilot and eventually eaten.
The Yellowjackets pilot teased a future event, where a girl ran barefoot in the snow, her face covered. She finally falls into a pit with stakes, following which her friends eat her, marking their eventual descent into cannibalism and hunting.
The Season 3 finale finally revealed that the Pit Girl was Mari, and the events leading to her death were revealed.
While the Pit Girl's death was initially teased in the pilot, it was actually different in the Season 3 finale. Many of the characters' reactions teased in the pilot meant something else entirely, and we also learned that Natalie was able to connect with the outer world, moments after the Pit Girl's death, symbolizing that Mari's death launched their rescue plan.

Yellowjackets Season 3 finally showed the aftermath of Pit Girl's death
Every Yellowjackets fan finally found the answer to the burning question introduced in the finale: Who is the Pit Girl, and what led to her death?
While Mari being the Pit Girl doesn't come as a big shock, as fans had already speculated it from her physical description and the events that took place throughout the three seasons, still, seeing how Mari was chosen as the Pit Girl and her eventual death was a horrifying experience.
While the Pit Girl's death could be described as harrowing, intense, and brutal in the Yellowjackets pilot, we learn that many things were happening behind the scenes that were not shown in the pilot.
For Instance, we finally learn that Natalie was not even a part of the hunt and the eventual eating, as she had traded places with Hannah. Secondly, Van's indifference teased in the pilot after the Pit Girl's death was more of a heartbreak for her friend, as she was the one who first discovered Mari at the bottom of the pit.
Moreover, another haunting scene teased in the pilot was Misty's creepy smile, which many interpreted as a smile of triumph after successfully hunting and eating Mari. But in reality, it was a smile of triumph as Natalie could connect with the outer world, as we finally saw in the finale.
Why was the Pit Girl's death shown differently in the pilot and the Season 3 finale?
Pit Girl's death was an important event in the Yellowjackets pilot, which set the tone of the show and set viewers' expectations that the girls will eventually turn against each other.
Co-creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson discussed the tonal shifts in Pit Girl's death in the pilot and the Season 3 finale in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter:
''It was about having them feel different, but without robbing what was powerful about them in the first place.''
They added:
''If we simply retold the exact same story, it wouldn’t have had the same impact. Of course, we are telling the same story in terms of the plot points of what happens, but we wanted to create an experience for the viewers where they go, “Oh, I understand now.” And, “That’s not exactly the way I thought that it was playing out'''
