The episode tells the story of Mary Louise Day, a 13-year-old girl who disappeared in 1981 from her home in Seaside, California. For over 20 years, people thought she was dead, but in 2003, a woman claiming to be Mary showed up.
Mary and her sisters grew up in a troubled household with their mother and stepfather, William Houle. William was accused of being violent toward Mary, and on the night she disappeared, there was a fight between the family. Mary was never seen again, but her family did not report her missing.
They moved away and told weird stories about how she had run away. However, the case took an unexpected turn in 2003, when a woman stopped by police in Phoenix said she was Mary Day. She was thought to be the same girl who had disappeared two decades ago.
The police then carried out DNA tests and other investigations to get to the truth. They sought help from Mary’s sisters, Kathy and Sherrie, who told them everything they remembered from their childhood. As the test results came out, the mystery only became more complicated.
