Dick Wolf's One Chicago franchise is one of the most popular procedurals on NBC, which make up the Chicago Wednesdays and air new episodes weekly in a three-hour time slot.
The franchise comprises four shows: Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, Chicago PD, and Chicago Justice.
Starting with Fire in 2012, the franchise follows the lives of first responders and heroes working tirelessly in the titular Windy City. Firehouse 51, District 21, and Gaffney Medical Center follow the lives of firefighters, Detectives, and doctors working in Chicago.
While the shows share the same universe and also feature some crossover guest appearances, they are essentially standalone and can be watched independently. Someone new to the franchise can start with any show and work their way to others in the franchise.
More on the One Chicago universe in our story.
How are the One Chicago shows connected?
The One Chicago universe mainly consists of four shows: Chicago Med, Chicago PD, Chicago Fire, and Chicago Justice. While all three shows are currently running, Justice was canceled after one season.
The three running shows are some of NBC's most-watched procedurals that air every Wednesday and are available to stream in their entirety on Peacock.
Essentially belonging to the same universe, the shows follow different characters with standalone storylines that can be watched independently. Watching all three One Chicago shows would give a more holistic experience because they offer feature guest appearances from other shows; they can also be watched independently without watching the other two.
However, the shows share some running similarities, making them feel part of the same universe. One of them is Molly's Bar, owned by the members of Firehouse 51, which is heavily featured in Chicago Fire. But you can spot it time and again in Chicago Med and Chicago PD, too.
One Chicago universe also shares two pairs of siblings, the Dawsons and the Halsteads, which makes their cross-guest appearances possible.
Gabby Dawson from Fire and Antonio Dawson from PD are siblings, and similarly, Jay Halstead from PD and Will Halstead from Med are siblings, which makes for great small crossover events.
In addition, the universe also features many crossover events, where two of its shows are merged for specific episodes. It has featured two mega crossovers, where all three shows were featured simultaneously.
Are there other Dick Wolf shows that share universe with the One Chicago franchise?
In addition to the four shows in the One Chicago franchise, Wolf's other franchises are in the same universe and often feature characters.
His most famous and longest-running franchise, Law & Order, and its spin-offs, Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order: Organized Crime, are sometimes featured in the universe. One link is actor S. Epatha Merkerson, who appeared as different characters in Law & Order and Chicago Med.
Another popular Wolf franchise that also shares a universe with Chicago is the FBI and its two spin-offs, FBI: International and FBI: Most Wanted. Since International follows the Fly Team traveling across to solve cases, it sometimes makes a good premise for a crossover with the franchise.
Wolf's latest Amazon Prime Video procedural, On Call, is not part of the universe as of yet because it is set in California. However, future seasons could feature appearances by some characters from the Chicago franchise.
