Platform 7 is primarily set at Peterborough Station. However, scenes central to the plot were actually filmed at Keighley Station in West Yorkshire. Additional scenes, such as those in the station concourse and forecourt, were shot at Kidderminster Station in Worcestershire. Outside the station, some events were filmed in the Leeds suburb of Chapel Allerton.

The story has a supernatural vein running through it. Thus, using a train station as the main setting was vital for the plot and its theme. The train station setting also added to the eerie and otherworldly atmosphere that the series required.

Metaphorically, the train station represents purgatory, mirroring the idea of being stuck between life and death. Author Louise Doughty, who wrote the novel Platform 7, humorously noted that if she ever ended up in purgatory, it would feel like being trapped at Peterborough Station on a cold November night.
