Exploring the controversy around An Update On Our Family
The couple adopted a two-and-a-half-year-old Chinese boy in 2017 and documented his whole adoption process.
Since the Stauffers' adoption of this Chinese boy, Huxley, their channel gained a lot of new subscribers, with one million subscribers by 2020.
After Huxley's adoption, the Stauffers' became quite regular in portraying the highs and lows of parenting and Huxley's adjustments into a culturally different family, especially after he was diagnosed with Autism some years later.
Since the Stauffers' regular vlogs about their personal family life and Huxley, their audience noticed Huxley's absence from them and social media, hinting that the family has given him up. This sparked a controversy accusing the family of adopting a Chinese boy for followers and views, and the need to regulate privacy on the Internet.
After news about Huxley's autism came to light, James released a statement in an interview with People Magazine:
“We’ve never wanted to be in this position. And we’ve been trying to get his needs met and help him out as much as possible…we truly love him.”
Myka added:
“There’s not an ounce of our body that doesn’t love Huxley with all of our being. There wasn’t a minute that I didn’t try our hardest and I think what Jim is trying to say is that after multiple assessments, after multiple evaluations, numerous medical professionals have felt that he needed a different fit and that his medical needs, he needed more.”
An Update On Our Family explores the family's dynamics in the wake of Huxley's disappearance and unveils the dark web of parenting and the need for online validation.
