The newly released Disney+ series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is creating quite a buzz as it perfectly balances nostalgia and innovation. The live-action series connects to classic Disney Parks attractions by blending elements from the Star Wars universe with the iconic theme parks.

The show arrived on Disney+ in December 2024 and took less time to become a popular TV series, especially because of its fresh narrative and engaging characters. At the heart of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is the group of four young travelers—Wim, Fern, KB, and Neel.

As they explore their seemingly normal planet, they discover a hidden spaceship and embark on an adventurous journey. As their quest begins, the protagonists cross paths with more fun and nostalgic characters like SM-33 and Force-user.

However, there aren't the nostalgic hits offered to viewers, as there's more to watch in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. The designers of the show ensured a vibrant and immersive environment that will lead you to think about Disney’s Galactic Starcruiser.

The visuals and designs that fans love in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew come straight from two seasoned co-production designers, Doug Chiang and Oliver Scholl. With decades of experience, the two crafted new worlds in rich colors, each filled with its own beauty and dangers.

While talking about their collaboration and creation of appealing designs, Lucasfilm's Senior Vice President and Executive Design Director Doug Chiang spoke highly of Scholl. He said:

"I love those kinds of collaborations because we get fresh ideas. He may suggest something that I hadn't thought of before, and it's a terrific way of world-building."

Through their collaboration, they were able to bring new ideas and create a more authentic look. However, they also faced notable challenges, especially while designing the homeworld of the four protagonists.

Chiang emphasized using the specific color palette for At Attin that resembles the warm, inviting suburban neighborhoods often seen in Steven Spielberg’s movies. He added:

"We were very conscious of using the color palette to distinguish the environments. And it's one of those things where George [Lucas] had established that idea way back."

Additionally, while creating the designs for cities in the show, the designers "went with a brutalist architecture style." Be it the Onyx Cinder or one of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew's major locations Starport Borgo, the designers aimed for a unique twist.
