Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage is a CBS spin-off based on the popular show The Big Bang Theory, and takes off from where the other notable spinoff, Young Sheldon left off. Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage focuses upon the trials and tribulations of Georgie, Sheldon's brother, as he tries to navigate his marriage with Mandy.
All seems bright and sunny, except there's a catch, the glaring age gap between Georgie and Mandy. Back when Georgie first met Mandy during the fifth season of Young Sheldon, he was seventeen while she was twenty-nine. It was subsequently confirmed by the co-creator of Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage, Steve Holland, in an interview with Deadline, that the CBS spin-off will find Georgie and Mandy when they are nineteen and thirty-one respectively.
Georgie and Mandy initially started off as a one-night stand that eventually bloomed into a full-blown relationship and marriage following Mandy's pregnancy. As if the age gap wasn't already an issue, Georgie and Mandy differ on a lot of issues.
Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage cast and crew open up about the age gap
The creators of Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage decided to incorporate the age gap between the two titular characters as an effective storytelling device that will bring out the best of television and also provide many hilarious moments.
From the beginning, their relationship was beset with friction as Georgie lied about being twenty-one years old when he was actually seventeen and Mandy lied about being twenty-five years old when she was going on twenty-nine back when they first met each other.
Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage then saw Mandy renewing her relationship with her mother Audrey and her father Jim, while living with them and taking care of her baby Cecee. Rachel Bay Jones, who plays Audrey in the CBS show, opened up about the relationship between Georgie and Mandy in an interview with US Magazine. She stated:
“I really hope Audrey doesn’t break them up. We’re all hoping that Georgie and Mandy will have a second marriage and a third marriage and that it will always be with each other, because you can see the relationship is so good."
Steve Holland too emphasized on the age gap as one of the primary driving forces of the story. He commented:
"In fact, we just shot an episode about that (Mandy’s) drive to have a bigger friend group is also complicated by the fact that her friends are her age, and Georgie friends are his age, and there’s not a lot of overlap."
Accordingly, Montana Jordan, who plays the titular character of Georgie, remarked that the conversation around the age gap has finally brought the spotlight to his character, allowing Georgie to develop his own arc. He said:
"In this new show, Georgie finally gets to show that he’s not just this dumb kid. He actually does have a brain on him. And on Young Sheldon I’m sure he got overlooked a lot. Maybe him being the tire king is his way of showing and proving people that he is not this dumb kid (but a mature adult). He actually has some brains on him."
Will Georgie and Mandy stay together?
Although Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage is being developed to last a while, speculation is rife about whether the couple would be able to reconcile their differences and stay married to each other. It is interesting to note that during several episodes of TBBT, it was stated that Georgie had two ex-wives. Emily Osment, who plays Mandy, touched upon this eventuality during an interview with TVLine:
"I'm hoping that I'm the ex-wife and the new wife. People get divorced and remarried. Why can't she be both?"
Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage airs new episodes every Thursday on CBS at 8 PM ET.
