Taylor Sheridan's Landman finally saw its Season 1 conclusion on Paramount+, where Jon Hamm's Monty Miller finally dies, leaving his oil company M-Tex with Billy Bob Thornton's Tommy Norris.

As established in the show's penultimate episode, Monty finally succumbed to his heart problems after his aorta ruptured, and he died in Episode 10.

After Hamm's breakthrough role in 2007 Madmen, he has always taken up guest roles on television, and Landman was one of them. As Tommy's boss, Hamm's Monty had to die in the finale for the show's protagonist to finally step up and set his arch for Season 2.

Till now, Tommy used to do the groundwork for Monty, and the latter handled the actual business, but with Monty now gone, Tommy will have to handle all the aspects of M-Tex's business and Monty's family.

More on Monty's death in Landman and what it means for Tommy in our story.

How did Monty Miller die in Landman Season 1?

Throughout Landman Season 1, Monty's heart condition was mentioned in passing, and it was hinted that a busy lifestyle and stress are not good for his worsening heart condition. His wife Cami often reminded him to exercise, have a healthy lifestyle, and not take too much stress on the job.

But Monty, being the CEO of an oil company in Texas, stress was a big part of the job as he had to see to the public relations issues, manage all his employees, and see to all the legal obligations that were all important for the smooth running of his business. All these duties not only left him with no time to spare for exercise or a healthy lifestyle, but the stress from the job actually took a toll on his worsening heart condition until it finally gave out in the finale.

While doctors were suggesting a heart transplant for Monty in the Landman Season 1 finale, this was not possible because his heart rate was skyrocketing. Eventually, his aorta ruptured, and Monty died in the finale before the doctors could have proceeded with a heart transplant.

What does Monty's death mean for Tommy and Cami in Landman?

While Cami is visibly heartbroken after her husband's death in the Landman finale, she knows that now she has to take her husband's legacy forward. As for Tommy, while he is also upset by the news, he knows that things have to change after Monty's death, and he is now to head M-Tex.

After Monty's death, Tommy is automatically promoted to the director of the company, and the first thing he does after that is to advise Cami to sell the company. Being in the oil business for very long, Tommy knows the toll it takes on your life and after Monty's death, Tommy doesn't want the same fate for him or for Cami.

But since Cami is adamant about further taking the risk and gambling with the oil business, Tommy has to comply with her wish. Cami wants to plunge further into the oil business to venture into philanthropy and charity in her late husband's name, which would be her driving force for Season 2.

As for Tommy, he is caught at the center of Monty's family and business after his death and will have to step into his professional duties in Season 2, which will create a problem and contradict his personal life.
