Dexter: Original Sin, which is set before the events of the original Dexter series, revolves around the early days of the Bay Harbor Butcher. In the first episode, we see Dexter Morgan join Miami Metro's forensic department as an intern. The rest of the episodes follow him balancing his work with hunting down other serial killers. There is, however, one question that fans have always had about Dexter.

Throughout the eight seasons of Dexter, the protagonist has a serial killer ritual. After collecting his prey's blood on the glass slide and coverslip, Dexter cuts up the body, takes it to the sea in a boat, and dumps it. Over the years, fans have been wondering how Dex could afford the boat on a forensic tech salary. This is a problem that Original Sin could probably solve.

The boat named Slice of Life has played an important role in Dexter's serial killer ritual. Apart from using it to get rid of bodies, the boat is his way of giving others the impression he is enjoying a normal life. When the boat is destroyed by the storm in the Season 8 finale, people initially think Dexter has died, too. However, the closing moments of the finale reveal Dex is alive in a small town.

One thing that has bothered viewers through all eight seasons of the original Dexter series is that Slice of Life is expensive. However, a forensic tech's salary in Florida, the state in which the original Dexter series is based, is approximately $62,000. This would mean that Dex could not have afforded the boat! This is where Dexter: Original Sin might help.

How could Dexter: Original Sin could help solve the boat plot hole?

The original Showtime Dexter series never explained how Dexter financed his double life. A logical explanation for the boat would be Dexter saving money for years. Based on how Dexter: Original Sin Episode 6 ends, Dex needs to find a new way to get rid of bodies now, as the police have found the remains of Dexter's previous victims in the Everglades.

By giving Dexter a boat in Original Sin, the writers could solve the body disposal problem. However, Sarah Michelle Gellar's Tanya Martin offered Dexter an internship that pays only $4.25 an hour in the Original Sin premiere. If affording the boat in the original Dexter felt like the writers were pushing the suspension of disbelief too far, it would certainly seem difficult for a young Dexter in the 90s.

However, there is a theory on how Dexter gets his boat in Dexter: Original Sin. It involves Camilla Figg, the woman who convinced Dex to euthanize her in the third season. She returns in Dexter: Original Sin Episode 6, where she makes Dex an offer to let him take her boat out for a sail. Maybe she can sell her boat for cheap to Dexter or help him find one.
