The 97th Academy Awards, or the Oscars 2025, are finally here. The ceremony, which lasted 4 hours and 19 minutes, aired live on ABC on March 2, 2025, and was streamed simultaneously on Hulu. This year, Conan O'Brien hosted the ceremony. Sean Baker's Anora won the coveted prize of best picture.

Apart from Anora, other big winners at the Oscars 2025 are Adrien Brody, for his role as László Tóth in The Brutalist, Kieran Culkin, who played Benji Kaplan in A Real Pain, and Zoe Saldaña for her performance as Rita Mora Castro in Emilia Pérez.

What were the biggest moments in the Oscars 2025 ceremony?

As stated earlier, the 97th Academy Awards was streamed on Hulu while it was televised simultaneously on ABC. Hosted by Conan O'Brien, here are some of the biggest moments in the awards ceremony:

  • Anora won the coveted prize

The best picture award in the ceremony was presented by actors Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, who appeared together in the iconic romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally. The winner was declared to be Anora, an independent movie that won over other big movies like Dune: Part Two, A Complete Unknown, and Wicked.

  • Yuval Abraham's speech

The Best Documentary Feature Film was one of the most surprising wins in the 2025 Oscars awards ceremony. No Other Land, a documentary made in collaboration between four Palestinian and Israeli activists, depicts the living conditions in the Gaza Strip. In his acceptance speech, Israeli filmmaker and journalist Yuval Abraham said this about co-director Basel Adra, who is Palestinian:

“When I look at Basel, I see my brother, but we are unequal. We live in a regime where I am free under civilian law and Basel is under military laws that destroy his life. There is a different path, a political solution without ethnic supremacy, with national rights for both of our people.”

Anora director Sean Baker also won the Best Director award. In his acceptance speech, Baker urged people to support movie theaters as they have been struggling ever since they opened up after the pandemic. His exact words were:

"Where did we fall in love with the movies? At the movie theater. Watching a film in the theater with an audience is an experience. We can laugh together, cry together, scream in fright together, perhaps sit in devastated silence together, and in a time in which the world can feel very divided, this is more important than ever. It's a communal experience you simply don't get at home. And right now, the theatergoing experience is under threat. Movie theaters, especially independently-owned theaters, are struggling, and it's up to us to support them."

Baker urged adults to introduce the movie-going experience to children so that the latter are molded into future filmmakers and movie lovers.
