Bad Sisters takes dark humor and twisted family drama to a whole new level. At the heart of its first season, is the mysterious death of Jean-Paul, aka “The Prick”. He was the despicable husband of Grace Garvey.

With its mix of comedy, suspense, and revenge, this Apple TV+ series has kept fans hooked.

And, the question on everyone’s mind is: how did JP die? Was it an accident or a murder?

If you’ve watched the show, you know JP was no ordinary husband. He was a manipulative, cruel, and abusive man who made life unbearable for everyone around him. He didn’t have any shortage of enemies. It included not just his wife, Grace, but also her fiercely protective sisters.

So, when he ends up dead, it feels like poetic justice. But, how did it really happen, and who was responsible?

Let’s get into the details behind JP’s death.

JP’s reign of terror in Bad Sisters

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of JP’s death, let’s talk about why everyone wanted him gone. JP (played by Claes Bang) wasn’t just an abusive husband to Grace (Anne-Marie Duff), he was a straight-up nightmare to everyone around him. JP’s list of crimes ranged from psychological torment to outright cruelty.

He did not just control Grace’s every move, he also isolated her from her family. Their teenage daughter, Blanaid, was emotionally abused by him. He tormented her sisters too.

He r*ped Eva, manipulated Ursula with blackmail, and sabotaged Becka’s business plans. He also caused Bibi’s car accident. She was left with a prosthetic eye after that.

JP was that guy, the kind of character you hate so much that you feel a sense of satisfaction when you see his downfall.

Now, JP wasn’t just terrible as an adult. His childhood hinted at the sociopath he’d become. He used to drown frogs in milk. He even possibly murdered his sister Laura.

In Bad Sisters, JP’s actions as a child were horrifying. Even his father’s death was no accident. JP coldly watched him choke on a glass eye. Then later he stored the body in a freezer. This guy was a walking red flag from day one.

The night of JP’s death

In the season one finale of Bad Sisters, the big reveal comes. The sweet and soft-spoken Grace is the one who killed JP. After years of abuse, Grace reached her breaking point at the family cabin.

JP, being the monster he was, had just confessed to impregnating Grace’s sister Eva during a drunken assault years earlier. This, paired with JP’s violence (he punched Grace in the stomach that night), pushed her over the edge.

Grace strangled JP with his own pajama bottoms. This was an act that was both shocking and cathartic. It wasn’t just about that night’s cruelty. It was years of bottled-up pain and rage all out in one decisive moment.

However, things get crafty with the murder of JP. Inspired by the bizarre death of Isadora Duncan, the dancer, Grace decided to make JP’s death look like a tragic accident.

She wrapped a red scarf she had knitted, around his neck. Then, placed him on a quad bike, and sent the vehicle careening into a tree. And there you have it, a perfectly staged “accident.” Or so it seemed.

But, Grace didn’t do it alone. Enter Roger, the neighborhood nice guy with a bone to pick with JP. Roger had come to the cabin that night to confront JP about false accusations that had ruined his reputation.

Instead, he found Grace amidst all the chaos. He stepped in to help her stage the scene. However, Grace chose to keep Roger’s involvement a secret. She shared the full truth with no one, not even her sisters, in Bad Sisters.

Why did Grace kill JP in Bad Sisters?

In Bad Sisters, JP’s death wasn’t just a crime of passion, it was an act of survival. Over the years, JP had drained every ounce of Grace’s spirit with his manipulative and violent behavior.

He isolated her, shamed their daughter, and humiliated her family. The final straw came when he told her that he had raped Eva. He was the reason behind her pregnancy that not only ended in miscarriage, but also destroyed Eva’s long-term relationship.

Grace’s act of strangling JP was more than revenge. It screamed liberation. For the first time in years, she reclaimed power over her life. She finally protected her family from his reign of terror.

Grace’s decision to kill JP set off a chain of events. It rippled through the lives of everyone involved. Matt Claffins was investigating JP’s death with his brother Thomas. They found evidence of the murder and overheard the sisters discussing their involvement.

But, after Becka begged him not to report them, Matt chose to burn the evidence. Grace and her sisters were free to go in Bad Sisters.

Grace withdrew her life insurance claim. She saved the Claffins family business from bankruptcy. With JP gone, the Garvey sisters were finally free.

Bad Sisters is available to watch on Apple TV+.
