HBO's The Last of Us finally kicked off with its Season 2 premiere, and it is all the hype on the Internet right now. Partly owing its success to the video game it is adapted from, the show debuted in January 2023 and follows a dystopian world taken out by a contagious fungal infection.

Season 2 marked the return of Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie, respectively, with Kaitlyn Dever and Catherine O'Hara in new characters.

The Season 2 premiere saw a five-year time jump. Joel and Ellie are now living in Wyoming with Tommy and Maria. The premiere mostly featured the falling out between Joel and Ellie, with very little action.

Here are some fan reactions to The Last of Us Season 2 premiere.

Fan reactions to The Last of Us Season 2 premiere

After almost two years, The Last of Us Season 2 is finally here. Fans, and especially people who have already played the game, were excited to see how the premiere would unfold, and the show is all the rage on Twitter and Reddit right now.

Since the Season 2 premiere was slow-paced and was more focused on Ellie and Joel's falling out rather than immediate action, fans had mixed feelings about the pacing, as these Twitter reactions highlight:

''I expected the first episode to be much more fast paced, but no. Adding in therapy scenes that lasted 10 minutes, and weren’t in the game, was useless. Breaking the second game up into 2 seasons is gonna slow this show down big time. There are going to be so many flashback that don’t push the narrative forward. They’ve committed to The Walking Dead formula 100%.'' @thecalebfindley wrote.
''...Ep 1 had me like… damn. the weight of it all??? they really said: let's open the season w feelings , and i ate it up 😭 cinematography was too clean, tension was on slow burn, and the acting? yeah they still got it'' @web3danaaa

Another essential element in The Last of Us Season 2 was Kaitlyn Dever's Abby, who is an important character in the game, and her motivations were known in the premiere itself. Fans also had mixed reactions about her introduction:

''Not a fan of them revealing the Abby motivation right away.'' u/EricReiz commented.

But positive responses to Abby's introduction seem to believe that since the show has to be finite, it is good that they introduced her character straight away, and the story can now build at its pace:

''I thought it was a good idea to show Abby's motivations early on. When the big moment happens later, viewers won't hate Abby as much, and it'll be much easier for them to empathize with her'' u/LucianLegacy responded.
''I liked how they introduced Abby. They definitely aren't in any kind of rush to hit all of the highlights this season...'' u/Jamvaan stated.

While the reactions seemed mixed on Abby and the pacing, most fans were satisfied that The Last of Us is faithful to the game and is including even the minutest of details (like Ellie and Dina's dance scene and the supermarket scene) from the game, and it looks like the fans are going to be invested in the show.

''I loved the stalker scene. Some of my favorite moments in the game were the stalkers.'' u/dunn000 pointed out.
''As interesting for players as I could imagine. Still extremely faithful, but the reordering of presentation is fascinating and compelling.'' u/Superb-Obligation858 wrote.

While fan reactions are both positive and negative, it is safe to say that the fans surely want more from The Last of Us. Since Season 2 has just kicked in, it would be interesting to see how the story builds on characters and plot in the coming episodes.
