Marvel's Echo miniseries gave us a story that detailed Maya Lopez's journey and set the stage for Daredevil: Born Again. As we go into Born Again, the interaction of Echo and the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) continues to play out, giving us useful foundations for future street-level tales.

Although a lot of Wilson Fisk's story is related to the Daredevil series, Echo is where his journey to become mayor of New York City started.

Here's how Echo, in a way, set up Daredevil: Born Again.

Though Daredevil's appearance in Echo was short, it made an impact. Charlie Cox reprised his role as Matt Murdock in a flashback scene during Maya Lopez's initial days under the wing of Kingpin. The scene features Daredevil chasing Fisk's henchmen, which results in a violent showdown with Maya.

The fight sets up Maya as a skilled fighter and makes her a central figure in the MCU's street-level stories. In contrast to previous rumors, Daredevil did not materialize in his yellow-and-red costume from She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, rather, he wore his original red-and-black version from Netflix's Daredevil.

This action upholds Marvel Studios' strategy of combining the best aspects of the Netflix show and the MCU. Though linking characters such as Daredevil and Kingpin, Echo does not affirm Netflix's Daredevil series as canonical.

Marvel has yet to officially make clear how occurrences from the Netflix series fit into its more considerable continuity.

Kingpin's ambitions in Echo's post-credits scene are a direct setup for Daredevil: Born Again

The post-credits sequence in Echo directly connects to Daredevil: Born Again. Wilson Fisk observes a news broadcast analyzing New York City's mayoral election. Since public opinion favors a mayor who can tackle crime and adversity, Fisk feels he has a chance to ascend to power.

This tees up heavily an adaptation of Marvel Comics Devil's Reign, where Fisk becomes mayor of NYC and enacts rigid anti-vigilante laws.

Vincent D'Onofrio, who plays Kingpin, confirmed that Fisk's political narrative will feature prominently in Born Again.

However, recent news shows that Fisk had already become mayor by the time Born Again started, which indicates significant changes from previous projections. The show also brings substantial changes to Matt Murdock.

Foggy Nelson passed away in the beginning of the series, and Karen Page has moved to San Francisco.

These plot points result from Marvel Studios' choice to reimagine some parts of Daredevil's history for its Disney+ iteration.

Marvel Studios has explained that Daredevil: Born Again occurs several years after Netflix's Daredevil, with Matt Murdock reverting to vigilantism after retiring during the Blip. The show covers various timelines, including Fisk's path to political ascension and Matt's path toward regaining his identity as Daredevil. Contrary to speculation, Jon Bernthal's Punisher does not appear in the Echo.

Although Bernthal will return to future MCU productions, his status on Born Again remains uncertain. Fans have been awaiting official word about his return.

With nine episodes scheduled to release on Disney+, fans can watch Daredevil: Born Again, which started airing on March 4, 2025.

Both Echo and Daredevil: Born Again can be streamed on Disney+.
