Desmond Hart, played by Travis Fimmel was created specifically for Dune: Prophecy, and by the end of season 1 of the show, a lot is revealed about him that particularly explains the source of his powers while also debunking the common misconception surrounding it.

Dune: Prophecy revealed in his final episode that Desmond Hart’s powers came from the Thinking Machines that were implanted in him. This further confirmed that despite returning as a new man after his encounter with Shai-Hulud, it was not Shai-Hulud who gave him his powers.

Let us now explore the origin of Desmond Hart’s powers and in detail how he got them.

How did Desmond Hart get his powers in Dune: Prophecy?

Right in the premiere of Dune: Prophecy, Desmod Hart was seen killing Pruwet Richese by burning him inside out just by using his mind. This reveals the great power that he seemingly acquired after surviving being eaten by Shai-Hulud.

However, instead of being killed by that encounter, Hart seemed to be reborn with new powers that he claimed would be helpful to the Imperium. Eventually, it is revealed that Desmond is kind of a living weapon himself as he passes a virus on his victims that feeds on the fears that their minds are already holding.

This explains how Hart killed Mother Kasha despite her not being present in front of him. As Dune: Prophecy heads toward the finale, an injured Hart catches up with Ynez, Valya, and Keiran, who try to get away from him but fail and that activates a fear response in Valya.

However, since they had already figured out how Hart makes his kills, Valya remains calm, and instead of fighting her fear, she lets it pass through her and that opens up a vision, which finally explains how Desmond got the powers that he currently has.

It is through this vision that the viewers, along with Valya learn that Desmond does not have any actual power in him as someone had taken one eye of Hart out and after putting a number of small devices inside the eye socket, his eye was put back in its place. This means that all his powers are there because of Thinking Machines and though it is not completely clear whether he got them implanted inside him on his own wish or not, he seems to be controlling his powers well.

However, it is not revealed who is behind this implant, and whoever that it, they seem to be having something against the Sisterhood as well. Despite being able to see the vision, Valya could not gather many details, which further made the identification of the mastermind behind this impossible.

Who is Desmond Hart in Dune: Prophecy?

Desmond Hart is introduced as a charismatic soldier in Dune: Prophecy, a character who does not have a backstory since he was created specifically for this show. A loyal soldier of Javvico Corrino, Hart was presumed to be dead when his regiment came under attack in Arrakis.

While nothing much is mentioned about the character’s past, Corrino seems to have some idea about who Desmond actually is but he also seems clueless when it comes to Desmond surviving the attack by Shai-Hulud.

After being swallowed by the giant sandworm, Desmond did not die and returned with a strange power that allowed him to burn people from the inside without actually setting them on fire.

As the Dune: Prophecy finally explains Desmond’s power clearly, it now remains to be seen how the Sisterhood tries to find more about the entity that put those powers inside Desmond and what their true intentions are.

Dune: Prophecy can be streamed on Max.
