The animated show Creature Commandos started James Gunn's DCU. The first episode canonized The Suicide Squad from 2021 and Peacemaker Season 1. However, fans were confused about one important detail from The Suicide Squad, Weasel's status in the opening moments of episode 1 of the show. "The Collywobbles," the first episode, reveals that Weasel is incarcerated in Belle Reve.
Viewers and Waller saw Weasel die by drowning in the opening moments of The Suicide Squad, which James Gunn directed. However, the post-credit scene reveals Weasel coming back to life, and fans assume that he will probably enjoy his freedom. But Weasel's incarceration in Belle Reve proved that assumption wrong.
How did Creature Commandos Episode 1 "retcon" The Suicide Squad?
During Weasel's last appearance, we saw him coming back to life in the post-credit scene of The Suicide Squad. We see the revived Weasel probably enjoying the wilderness as he wanders into the jungles of Corto Maltese. However, as said earlier, we see him back in prison in the first episode of Creature Commandos. His recapture probably played out in either of these two scenarios:
- Waller, after realizing that Weasel is still alive, used the best A.R.G.U.S. agents at her disposal and recaptured him. Or
- Weasel may have returned to Belle Reve by his own volition.
Given how Creature Commandos Episode 4 "Chasing Squirrels" played out, the latter might probably be the case. The episode reveals Weasel's past, including the truth behind the "crime" he is accused of.
James Gunn clarifies Weasel's past in Creature Commandos
The kids that Weasel is accused of killing are revealed to be his friends. Moreover, The Suicide Squad claims that he killed 27 kids, but the eight kids we see dying in the fourth episode of Creature Commandos are revealed to have met that gruesome fate because of an accident caused by an old man with a gun. Fans speculate that the number "27" was exaggerated or he was framed for other murders.
This backstory makes Weasel a very tragic figure who is pretty naive. So, it might very well be the case that after the post-credit scene of James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, Weasel may have wandered back to Belle Reve, and Waller had him arrested and detained him with other monsters. This is where we see him in the beginning of Creature Commandos as he is inducted into the Task Force "M."
When asked whether Weasel's tragic backstory was decided back in the writing sessions, Sean Gunn, Weasel actor, and James Gunn's brother said this:
"I didn't know the specifics of Weasel's backstory when we shot The Suicide Squad, but I did know that he hadn't really killed 27 children as he was accused of. James had always talked about Weasel as like a big dog, to me. He's no more evil than any dog that you know - that's what James likes to do with characters, is sort of [doing] a misdirect, where you think you've got a handle on who this character is, and then he'll switch it up and, at the very least, give them more depth, so that you see where that comes from, and what the foundation of that is. So I knew after I played Weasel the first time that there was a lot more there, which I was really happy to dive into in Creature Commandos."
This means that, while not all details were fleshed out, the core idea that Weasel was always innocent was decided back in 2019-2020 when The Suicide Squad was written.
What's in store for Weasel after Creature Commandos?
Fans have been speculating about Weasel's future in James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU. Some believe that he may meet his maker in the finale of Creature Commandos Season 1. But it's also possible that, similar to The Suicide Squad, we'll witness him take a fatal blow and somehow escape it. So, for now, all we have to do is wait for January 9th, 2025, when the finale releases.
Creature Commandos was renewed for a second season on December 23rd, 2024. Until then, you can enjoy the 7 episodes of the animated DCU show on Max.
