On February 11, 2013, Christine Belford passed away tragically at the New Castle County Courthouse in Delaware. Her former father-in-law, Thomas Matusiewicz, shot her in the chest as she was attending court for child support. Before killing himself, Thomas also injured two police officers and killed her friend Laura "Beth" Mulford.

A protracted dispute between Christine and her ex-husband, David Matusiewicz, led to her death, the details of which were explored in Very Scary People on Investigation Discovery. David abducted their three girls and transported them to Nicaragua in 2007.

Following a lengthy search, the children were located and returned to the United States. David was convicted of kidnapping and spent time in prison.

Despite his release, David and his family continued to torment Christine. This was done as they posted disparaging films about her online. This exacerbated an already stressful situation.

After dropping her kids off at school on the day of the shooting, Christine and her friend Laura went to the courthouse, and then Thomas Matusiewicz fired on them. This was particularly as soon as they entered the courthouse.

Laura was also slain in the attack, while Christine was shot in the chest. After the shooting, witnesses said that Christine was still breathing and blinking, but by the time paramedics got there, she had lost her pulse and was declared dead. Years of hostility and danger led to the deadly shooting.
