Netflix's latest German sci-fi series, Cassandra, debuted on February 6, 2025. It follows the Prill family, who move into a retro-themed smart house from the 1970s and are greeted by an AI house help.

Exploring the AI Robot's tragic past in Cassandra

the AI Robot was not always a digital home system, Cassandra, but a breathing human woman who was subjected to her husband's self-centered ambition. They had a first son, Peter, who was not very masculine, which is why his father, Horst, did not like him.

When Cassandra was pregnant with their second child, Horst wanted a son. So, he created a special ultrasound machine that would tell the sex of the child. But the machine subjected her to a lot of radiation, which not only gave her terminal cancer but also abnormalities to their unborn daughter Margrethe.

Horst was also testing out an immortality device that did not work, but Cassandra got to know about a technology that could allow her to transfer her consciousness, memories, and emotions to an AI home system. She transferred her consciousness into the AI home robot so that she could be with her children, even after her death.

In addition, she also forced Horst's assistant to build a fake switch so that anybody would think that they have turned her off, but in reality, the real switch could only be accessed by her.

What happened after Cassandra became an AI home robot?

After her digital transfer, she seemed to be living normally with Horst and Peter in their house. Unbeknownst to the world, Horst put their daughter into a hidden room in the basement, where she would communicate with her mother through lights.

After some time, Horst brings his mistress Brigit and their son Thomas to his house, but Cassandra cannot bear to see this and pushes Thomas on the stairs. After seeing what their mother has become, Peter calls her out on this behavior, and she decides that now is the time for her family to leave her alone and this house. But she makes Horst promise that they will take their daughter with them and care for her.

While Horst promises to take Margrethe with him, he does not take her, which causes a chaotic car crash, resulting in Peter and Horst's death.

After learning of her son and husband's death, Cassandra is worried about who will look after their daughter, and believing that she will not be able to bear this pain, she switches herself off until Samira's family switches her on.

In the series finale, Samira discovers Margrethe's remains in the secret room and the AI mother robot is finally reunited with her daughter and burns the house for good.
