Ransom Canyon has been making waves as Netflix's latest contemporary Western show. The penultimate episode of Ransom Canyon featured the death of an otherwise admirable character, i.e., Cap Fuller, played by actor James Brolin. While Ransom Canyon has its own share of violence, Cap Fuller's death came across as a natural, although tragic, development. His long, drawn-out life came to an end as he rested on his own land, lying against a tree, breathing his last.
While it's clear that Cap Fuller won't be returning to the show any longer, his presence might still be a determining factor in the narrative. This is especially true owing to the discovery that Jack Schumacher's Yancy is his grandson and shall inherit his land.
Why was Cap Fuller's death written into the debut season of Ransom Canyon?
It was recently revealed by Ransom Canyon showrunner April Blair that although Cap was an important character to reckon with in the Netflix show's debut season, it wasn't certain whether Brolin would commit to appearing in multiple seasons.
Because of this uncertainty, the character's arc was planned to be completed within the debut season itself. It is owing to this fact that the character's arc was slated to be completed in the debut season itself with his death. Brolin eventually came around to express his willingness to continue his role, however, the decision had been made by then.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with TVInsider, Blair revealed:
"We wanted someone who was kind of iconic like Jim to (play Cap), but we weren’t sure if he’d really sign up to do multiple seasons. So I always had in my head that his passing would be the thing that sort of (changed everything). Once Jim came, he was like, ‘I would stay!’ But we were sort of already in the process of killing him off, which was sad."
April Blair opens up on the twists of Ransom Canyon's finale
Blair decoded several of the twists contained in the finale episode of the Netflix show, shedding light on their narrative importance and the potential they contain to be explored in subsequent seasons. When asked about what the future holds for the character of Quinn, Blair noted:
"She comes back with a new mission (in season two). Quinn has spent a lot of her past trying to save other people, and she comes back changed by this experience. Season 2 for her is really about saving herself and doing what’s right for her.”
She was then asked about Reid and Lucas' friendship:
"They hit some roadblocks, but they definitely maintain a friendship, Reid evolves into someone who’s conflicted about life. He knows the sacrifices his dad made to save their ranch, but he also doesn’t agree with all of his dad’s moves. His dad moves a little wild sometimes. He has a loyalty to his father and a loyalty to his friendship with Lucas, and how he navigates those in Season 2 is fun — and a little heart-wrenching.”
Ransom Canyon is exclusively available for streaming on Netflix.
