Paramount Picture's Yellowstone is about to drop season 2 of its prequel 1923. There is another prequel 1883 and the fans are wondering about the connections between the two. 1923 jumps the time 40 years ahead in Yellowstone and we see the kids now grown up and taking care of the next generation of the family.

“I chose that moment in time [year 1923] to peek back in because you’re seeing the children that we’ve met in 1883 attempting to raise another generation of Dutton,” says Sheridan, the creator of the show, in a Paramount+ video and The Hollywood Reporter.

On the other hand, in 1923, we see Jacob Dutton and his wife Cara taking care of the next generation of the family, while they struggle with 20th-century struggles. How does 1883 relate to 1923?

The sequel 1923 is meant to explore and expand the Dutton family tree. The family is seen owning the ranch in 1883 but how they got to own one is shown in a single season in the prequel.

After James fought in the Civil War, James Dutton, his wife Margaret, and their children, Elsa and John, join a wagon train heading west to go far from the problem of the East. Their journey remains challenging with threats from native Americans and other settlers, illness, etc. Elsa Dutton, their teenage daughter, is wounded by an arrow, her dying wish is to get buried in a place that feels like paradise. This leads them to an area in Montana where they eventually settle.

They later claimed the territory near Elsa's burial place and that is what we come to know as Yellowstone Ranch over time they cultivated and expanded the ranch.

In the opening sequence of 1923, we learn that James Dutton passed away a decade after Elsa's death, leaving Margret and 2 children alone on the ranch. Margret tries to convince Jacob, James' brother to come. He agrees but by the time he comes, it's already too late. He was unable to save Margret however the two children were saved. Therefore, 1923, opens by showcasing an elderly Jacob and his wife Cara as the caretakers of the ranch. They are the ones raising the next generation of the Dutton family, the 2 surviving kids of James and Margret- John and Spencer who become Sr. John Dutton the family patriarch in the main Yellowstone. His older sister Elsa returned to narrate in 1923 season 2.

Therefore, James and Cara are the only connection to the 1883 prequel.
