Both 1883 and 1923 are two integral parts of the Yellowstone universe created by Taylor Sheridan. While 1883 serves to chronicle the early days of the Dutton family and how they came to own their family ranch in Montana, 1923 narrates the grueling tale of Jacob Dutton and his wife Cara, played by Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, respectively.
The spin-off and prequel shows are linked together by the Dutton family tree and the character of Elsa Dutton, who met her end in the first season of 1883, connecting 1923 with the other show through her voice-over narration.
Here's everything that we know.
The connection between 1883 and 1923 explored in detail
Although set forty years apart from each other, both 1883 and 1923 share remarkable narrative connections that complement the storylines of both shows. For instance, 1883 portrays the trials of James and Margaret Dutton as they decide to settle in the Paradise Valley, where they put their daughter Elsa to rest after a poisoned arrow kills her during the Lakota tribe attack.
Moving on, the debut season of 1923 mentioned that Jack Dutton died a decade after Elsa's death, and Margaret Dutton froze to death, leaving their three children behind. Jack's brother Jacob and his wife Cara take the children under their wing while trying to survive the harsh winter at their family ranch. Moreover, both shows use Elsa's voice-over narration to form an unbroken narrative link.
Julia Schlaefpfer and Brandon Sklenar open up about the finale of 1923 season 2
Julia Schlaefper and Brandon Sklenar portrayed the characters of Alexandra Dutton and Spencer Dutton, respectively, in the Paramount+ show's second season. In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the co-actors candidly opened up about their experience filming the latest season's finale episode. When asked about their phenomenal reunion scene that takes place on the train, Schlaepfer answered:
"That scene is the first time Alex and Spencer are reunited. It was also the first time Brandon and I were reunited as actors. It was the first scene we shot together this season, which I’m sure was not by accident, scheduling-wise. It was so surreal. We do spend so much of the season not together. As Alex, I was in survival mode all season."
She further added:
"The language that Alex used with the people she met along the way was different than how she speaks to Spencer, because she was on guard. She was trying to stay alive and didn’t know who she was going to encounter. So when we got to film that scene, for both me and Alex, I felt like I exhaled. The language just started flowing so naturally between them because they have this poetic rapport. Everyone on the crew was pretty emotional that day because after they both had such hard journeys, it’s so nice to see them back together again, and to also give Brandon and I a little bit of a win in the filming process."
On the other hand, Sklenar revealed:
"Like she said, it was the first time we had worked together in season two. It’s also the first time Spencer and Alexandra are seeing each other in a long time, and it was emotional."
1923 is exclusively available on Paramount+.
