Game of Thrones' prequel series House of the Dragon, featuring the Civil War between the Targaryens shows why there's no dragon left in Westeros during the beginning of the original show. While the two teams from House Targaryen battle against each other, their dragons also ensure they take down their kind.
Vhagar is the largest and strongest in House of the Dragon and is known for her gigantic size, formidable nature, and unmatched combat skills.
She was also the oldest dragon to appear in House of The Dragon, which also makes her slower than the younger dragons we see in the show.
Vhagar's history is mentioned in George R.R. Martin's other novels A Clash of Kings and A Storm of Swords, exploring her early life with her first rider, Visenya Targaryen who was one of Aegon the Conqueror's sisters. Vhagar and her rider played a major role in the Taragaryen conquest of Westeros.
Despite being the most terrifying and ruthless dragon among the Greens and the Blacks, here are five theories about the dragons who might be able to defeat Vhagar in battle.
1) Meleys
Iconically known as the Red Queen, Meleys is among the oldest dragons alive during the Dance of Dragons. Her exceptional speed, combat skills, and experience in battle make her a strong competitor against Vhagar.
In direct combat, though Meleys might be at a disadvantage against Vhagar's size and power. However, she could make up for it with her speed and agility. Additionally, rider skills and experience can also factor in a battle like this.
However, in the HBO series, Meleys and Vhagar locked horns in head-to-head combat after already being injured in a fight with Sunfyre.
Meleys could have given Vhagar a tough time but taking on Sunfyre at the same time proved overwhelming for the dragon. Both Meleys and Rhaenys perished, crashing to the ground.
2) Caraxes
Another dragon that can possibly succeed in taking down Vhagar is Caraxes, the Blood Wyrm. Daemon's dragon is agile, fierce, and experienced in battle, much like his rider, having fought in numerous skirmishes.
His expertise in rapid movements during fights is an advantage that can help him outplay heavier dragons like Vhagar, who move slower.
In the book, there is a notable battle between the two dragons at the Battle Above God's Eye where both dragons inflict severe damage on each other as they crash into the lake.
Vaghar dies in the lake, while Caraxes crawls to the shore and dies shortly afterward, succumbing to his injuries.
This proves that despite Vhagar's immense size, Caraxes' sheer tenacity and maneuverability can be a big game-changer in a battle like this.
3) Vermithor
Though Vermithor is 2/3rd the size of Vhagar, he is one of the most majestic dragons in House of The Dragon, first ridden by King Jaehaerys I.
The dragon remained riderless for years on Dragonstone until Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen hosted the Red Sowing ceremony in House of the Dragon, during which Vermithor chose Hugh Hammer as his new rider.
Vermithor is known for his fierce nature, huge size, and appealing bronze scales. The dragon has a history of dominating battles, which makes Vermithor worthy enough to face off against Vhagar, and possibly defeat her.
A battle between these two would be a titanic clash, and the sheer strength of both dragons would prove to be a major factor in a fight like this. In a confrontation, even though almost equally matched, Vermithor's smaller size and higher resilience might give him a slight edge.
4) The Cannibal
One of the wild dragons, The Cannibal, is named as such because he was known to eat his kind. Generally assumed to be a male dragon, Cannibal's gender isn't clearly specified in George R. R. Martin's book, as no one has ever come close enough to tame The Cannibal.
This dragon is wild and riderless, which might make his actions in battle, unpredictable. His wild instincts in battle might give him an edge over Vhagar. Also, because he eats his kind, The Cannibal's predatory instincts might portray Vhagar as prey, leading to a potentially devastating battle.
The Cannibal hasn't been clearly introduced in House of the Dragon season 2, but the dragon's arrival is eagerly anticipated by fans in the finale episode. The Cannibal is black with green eyes, which makes him visually even more terrifying than any other dragon in Westeros.
5) Syrax
Ridden by Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, Syrax shares a deep bond with her rider. She might lack expertise in fighting battles, but Rhaenyra's strategic expertise and will to claim the Iron Throne help Syrax win a battle with Vhagar.
Vhagar is huge but Syrax is not too small either. Rhaenyra Targaryen could let her dragon know the importance of dethroning Team Green. The dragon's loyalty toward her rider might help Syrax fight against Vhagar, who is often shown to be ignoring her rider, Aemond's direct orders.
