Currently in its 4th season, Ghosts has been a consistently popular comedy on CBS. First aired in 2021, the show had, during its second season, tried its hands on a Christmas special episode that exceeded the usual runtime of other episodes and lasted for an hour.

The premise of this episode was that of a classic rom-com and as Ghosts star Rose McIver said in an interview with Variety,

“They wanted to do a bit of a riff on the classic Christmas movies and the Hallmark style, and I love it — because our show does the same thing that “The Christmas Prince” did. It simultaneously makes fun of genre, but is totally on board with the joy that that genre brings.”

Asher Grodman, who plays Trevor in Ghosts, also talked about how the episode being an hour long added to the fun part of it. In an interview with CBS Morning, Grodman said,

“The hour-long concept is so much fun because we get to – as you see Trevor is going to attempt to do what no ghost has ever done before.”

In the same interview, Grodman also urged the viewers to watch the episode till the end as his character had a dream come true moment by the end of it.

"Wait till the very end. One of Trevor's great dreams is gonna come true"

Ghosts Hour-Long Christmas special episode was a parody of the rom-com genre

As mentioned by Grodman, one of the best things about the Ghosts Season 2 Christmas special episode was its runtime. Moreover, because of being an episode that lasted an hour, it was divided in two parts, which further doubled the fun for the fans.

The official synopsis of the episodes, titled The Christmas Spirit: Part 1 and The Christmas Spirit: Part 2 mentions,

“When Jay's sister Bela returns to Woodstone Mansion for a Christmas visit and brings a male friend, Samantha makes it her mission to spark a holiday romance between them.”

Besides this classic romantic comedy like plotline, the episode also focused on an attempted exorcism on Jay and how Sam gets possessed by a ghost who had been a victim of cholera.

Echoing Grodman’s words regarding the episode being an hour long making it more fun, Rose McIver told Variety,

“It was awesome that it was a one-hour episode broken into two. So many fans have been so sweet about saying they wish “Ghosts” was longer, and play out arc that you’re not racing through in 20-something minutes. And knowing that Sam was going to be possessed by Thor, I really wanted to lean into the opposite of that for the first half. Really play her sweetness and her traditional Hallmark vibe.”

In the same CBS interview mentioned before, Grodman also talked about the episode that focused on Trevor’s backstory and how that offered more insight into what happened to Trevor and how he ended up there. There was also the mention of a memorial service for him and a visitation from his parents.
