One of the interesting aspects debated about Daredevil: Born Again is the canonical status of the previous three seasons featuring the same actors. This continuity issue was addressed by Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock), during the premier event of the upcoming series. Cox also addressed the issue of calling it season 1 despite the series being a revival. He said:

"Its a continuation. There was a slight pivot made halfway through, but where we ended up is, it is much more of a continuation. Yeah, what we tried to do, what the writers have tried to do, which I think really impressive, is that we don't want to alienate new audiences. So we're calling it season one, and hopefully the story unfolds early on in such a way that you can, you get to know these characters very quickly. You understand the world. So, you don't have to have seen all the back catalog to understand it. But essentially it is a continuation."

Daredevil: Born Again actor Charlie Cox's comments explained:

Charlie Cox's comments finally confirm what some fans were suspecting about the upcoming season, which is supposedly more of a revival rather than a reboot. Ever since it was announced back in 2022, fans have been hoping that Daredevil: Born Again would serve as a revival/continuation of the previously released three seasons of Daredevil on Netflix.

The Netflix series was loved by both fans and critics for its tone, brutality, action scenes, and writing. The third season ended on a cliffhanger note where doctors were performing surgery on Benjamin Poindexter/Bullseye's spinal injury. But despite its cliffhanger ending, a month after the release of the third season, Netflix canceled the series in November 2018.

Similar to the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign, Daredevil fans also organized a #SaveDaredevil campaign. Marvel executives responded to this campaign after slowly integrating the Netflix Marvel characters, especially the Daredevil ones.

Feige first confirmed Charlie Cox's return in December 2021 before Spider-Man: No Way Home's release, the fifth episode of Hawkeye, "Ronin" featuring Vincent D'Onofrio's cameo as Kingpin, and Cox's cameo in the third Spider-Man movie.

However, after the inclusion of Daredevil characters, people have been wondering about the canonical status of seasons one, two, and three. Charlie Cox explained the same in another interview.

Cox was interviewed by TVLine on February 23, 2025. In that interview, the British actor clarified Daredevil: Born Again's canonical status, and what he said would be later echoed in the premier event. Charlie Cox said that despite being labeled as "season one", Daredevil: Born Again is more of a revival rather than a reboot. He said:

"It’s an interesting tightrope to walk, really, because we want to make sure that we include the elements of the show that made it popular and successful in the first place [on Netflix], the things that we discovered in the original show that landed with the audience. At the same time, we’re on Disney+ now, were calling it 'Season 1' even though the history is the same, and so we want to attract a new audience. We don’t want to suggest that people need to go back and see three seasons in order to understand and follow this story. So that’s an interesting jumping off place to achieve."

The first two episodes of Daredevil: Born Again will premiere on March 4, 2025. As the first season is underway, the next season will begin filming.
