It is a remarkable win for FX's Shogun series at the 82nd Golden Globes. After winning 18 out of 25 Emmys, the most wins for any series, the Golden Globes held on January 5, 2025, proved that Shogun is here to rule the television world.
The American series tells the story of feudal Japan and the rise of John Blackthorne to become a powerful feudal lord and a samurai under Tokugawa Ieyasu. Shogun is about Japan's history, and it made history by bringing forth Asian representation by showcasing the culture and traditions of feudal Japan.
Actor Hiroyuki Sanada, who plays the role of Lord Yoshii Toranaga in the hit period drama, bagged the Best Actor in a Television Series (Drama) award. He was followed by his co-star Tadanobu Asano, who won the award for Best Supporting Actor in a TV series.
Here is everything about Shogun's big win at the Golden Globes last night.
Shogun actor Hiroyuki Sanada bagged the Best Actor award at the 82nd Golden Globes
Sanda, who made his Golden Globes debut this year, was happy seeing the Asian representation at the awards when his hit period drama was nominated for the night,
“I’m feeling the Hollywood doors open wider than 20 years ago, when I came here for the first time. Step by step, they are understanding our culture. Especially like Shōgun, they respect our culture. It’s a great steppingstone for the next generation. I feel more comfortable, year by year.”
We can only imagine his pride after he bagged the Best Actor award, his first Globe, after beating many equally talented actors. This win made him the first Asian actor to win in this category and the first Japanese actor to take home a Golden Globe.
Earlier, he also won the Best Actor trophy at the Emmys and is also gearing up to reprise his role in Season 2.
Shogun actor Tadanobu Asano bagged the Best Actor in a Supporting Role award at the 82nd Golden Globes
Following him is co-star Tadanobu Asano, who won the best actor in a supporting role. He played the role of Kashigi Yabushige and his acceptance speech at the Golden Globes proves just how his role and the show have created history,
"Wow, maybe you dont' know me. I'm an actor from Japan and my name is Tadanobu Asano. This is a very big present for me! I'm very happy. Thank you!"
Asano's victory was more sweet because, unlike his co-star, he did not win the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. But last night was truly in the actor's favor, and his talents were recognized, which earned him this award.
In addition to Asano and Sanada, the show was also nominated for Best Television Series – Drama and Best Actress – Television Series Drama for Anna Sawai, both of which were won, making Shogun win four out of four awards it was nominated for.
It was a monumental win for the show, and the wait for Season 2 will now be even harder. It is still not confirmed whether Asano will reprise his role in Season 2, as his character died in Season 1 in a ritualistic suicide.
